Windows

The windows in the house are terrible - all but two large ones in the new kitchen need replacing. Problem is money, as ever. Though I had a good payment last month, we needed a lot of things, not least vehicles more suited to the purpose we now had for them.

With the plumbing nightmare we uncovered when upgrading the pipes, we spent a LOT of money fixing that up, then the new floors needed covering, that costs money too. between the electric and the plumbing we are over the house fix up budget for the year, with not much left to get other things we decided we needed - so... We cannot afford the four thousand dollars needed to replace all of the windows for mid grade windows, but may well be able to afford the twenty five hundred needed to replace them with the cheapest not very good windows, that are ten times better than the windows currently filling the holes in the walls. Would it therefore be better to buy the cheaper windows, with dual panes and better heat control, than leave the useless windows installed - they don't keep drafts or insects out, the storm windows fitted to them all are broken and gross looking, and they do nothing to keep the heat in, or out.

I personally think that the cheaper windows will give us breathing space, as it were, to get the house operating better than it is doing, and will last until we can afford to upgrade to the best windows - about seventy five hundred..

Any suggestions??

I would say it depends on the degree of bad. If the windows are completely useless, I would go with the simple, cheap solution for now, so you can feel better and save energy in summer.

Also ... how to put this nicely ... you do seem to move around a lot in the country, so maybe it is the best solution to have the windows done now in the way you can afford now. That way you can enjoy good conditions (but not excellent conditions) and ... who knows when you'll move again?

I kind of think that way.. About moving.. I really hope that I don't have to do that again, I am truly fed up of the constant moving around. I have lived in nineteen places in the last twenty years. It needs to stop......

These windows are 'protected' by storm windows that are stuck in place - they will not move, so we cannot open them to let air in. Problem is we can't shut them either so they are full of wasp nests between the windows, that we can't do anything with without getting wasps in the house. It is so annoying. The nests are at the top of the space, only the bottom window opens, and only nine inches. It is an "EEEEEEEEEK!!!" situation.

I will get someone to do that - I cannot kill nests of anything - the reaction to me is too much.

We had to hire a professional exterminator to take out a hive of wasps we had in our old house, they moved right into the walls...we were alerted to them by a Woodpecker who we let get to them the first year. Figured it was nature taking care of nature. But the second year, they were so many more, the kids were being stung outside playing. And they were on and in everything. It was sad...but they had to go.

Hmm...tough one but my personal feeling is to upgrade to the $2500 option and get newer and better windows that you can actually use. If you spend the $2500 for the cheaper option and then decide to sell the house later, you might recoup some of that money when you sell (unless you're renting?) Wouldn't whomever is installing the windows also be able to take care of the wasps for you?

On the other hand, if you keep the windows you have and save up for the really good ones you want, you can't really use the old windows and you might lose money on selling the house later if you decide to move.

Guess it depends on whether you think you might be there awhile?

We want to stay here for a long time - hopefully this will work out as I am now retired and should be able to live where wherever I want. I think we need to get windows that work as soon as possible, at least for some windows.. It is a difficult choice to make - Is it worth wasting $2500 on windows that we will upgrade within a couple of years.. I think it may be.
