To Keep Silent: What it means to you

We hear this tossed about in almost every Pagan/Wiccan forum/board there is. What does it mean, and why do we have to "Keep Silent"

"To Keep Silent" was the way of the Old Religion. You didn't go blabbing about things you did in ritual, or even about the fact that you were a Witch or Pagan in nature. That meant certain death if the information got to the wrong people.
It is also a way to preserve the rites of our beliefs without them getting too muddled or commercial. No Pagan/Witch in their right mind is going to publish ALL they know. Some give just enough information for wanna-be's to be dangerous. These should have kept silent all the way. Others give as much as possible, without giving away the real deep stuff. It takes years of study, and things being handed down from generation to generation to get a good grasp of all this path entails. Many I know between the Pagan boards I am a member of have been on this path so much longer than me. They know so much more, but many won't even share some of their deep knowledge with someone who isn't a part of their group, or they just simply aren't extremely sure of yet..and rightly so.
I can share my feelings of how a ritual went, and I can share things done in OPEN CIRCLE, but I can't tell anyone outside of my coven what goes on within a closed circle/ritual. It's part of the tradtion I follow (British), and was taught this way to my HP (former now..he left the coven)and my HPS. They were both in the Kingstone Trad, based on British, and our new little coven is beginning our own version...the Appalachain Tradition, based on British. We can't give away our secrets.
Talking, even in this day and age of supposed enlightenment, you can't just go telling people who/what you are, without some kind of negative reaction somewhere along the way. So...'tis best "To Keep Silent"

It is very easy to see why and to be reminded to why the Keep Silent Rule was established. It is still needed today, unfortunately. I hope someday that all pagans can be open with their faith and beliefs but, even then keeping secret what happen within the Circle will still be wise. For no reason other than if someone has a different opinion as to how an event should unfold and they know you cast a spell to change the outcome from what they disagree with they could cast and ruin or change your spell.

That's interesting. See, I didn't know about the rule, but it makes sense.

Thanks for explaining. emoticon

Firle, this is why I wanted to create this forum...so that we can all learn, teach, and understand.

Doing things the way we're taught is one thing, but knowing WHY we do them is so important. Just following the rules isn't always enough.
