Bird Flu
This is what I've been reading for the last two days, and it's scary. It's scary, because for the first time I've seen a scientific article, put together comprehensively and easy to read, yet with such power. They put it online because they feel that as many people as possible should know about it
Read it, please:
The Bird Flu Book
I'm scared.

Re: Bird Flu
I'll have to read this when I have a bit of time to sit and really read.
when I was living in Alabama, and still married to my now ex, we had a real problem with an ususually large amount black birds in our area. The poop, and the fact that birds were dying left and right, and just piling up created a huge issue.
Several years after the fact, it was tossed around that the reason for the deaths of the birds was a type of avian flu. Talk about scarey!!! Fortunately, only a small handful of people got sick, and to the best of my knowledge, none died...but you know how things get covered up.
anyway..I will read this when I have the time to devote to it.
Thanks for posting this, Firle!

Re: Bird Flu
Meh. I fear you'll curse me for it.
Even so, I believe it's something everyone needs to know about.

Re: Bird Flu
I bookmarked this, Firle, and will be reading it, with trepidation, I am sure.
Makes me wonder if we should stop keeping chickens. We're getting to the point where we only have a few and need to decide whether we want more young ones in the spring, or not. I really LIKE my chickens, and I sure like having the eggs...

Re: Bird Flu
The good news is that an outdoor flock of chickens is just fine. Even a small indoor one is ok. Homesteaders have nothing to worry about with their healthy, well-cared-for chickens. And you don't go around kissing them - that would be inviting trouble.
The huge, terrible problem are those chicken prisons with thousands upon thousands of them squeezed together, stressed out of their minds, overbread, and sitting in and breathing in their own !@#$. They are the best incubators for the highly lethal variant of the influenza virus. They should be closed down immediately - and the threat of a pandemic would be gone.
That's it! But try to tell that to agrobusiness.

This is scarey. Before I had my Mallards and my Bantam chickens (when my ex and I were married) I'd go to one such "prison" to buy fresh eggs. The stench was horrible. You could smell this place a couple of blocks away, and you in a totally closed up vehicle. I hated to go there, but my as*hole of a husband refused to go buy the eggs, and he wanted fresh, and it was the only place close by to get fresh. It wasn't long after I refused to go anymore that he decided to get our own chickens and some ducks.

Re: Bird Flu
The thing is the small homestead and the few rare bird breeder will be the ones to pay. We have a friend that has all old and rare breed chickens he has been warned that if they have a case within 3 miles of his property all his birds will be destroyed as precaution. Kentucky has the same view one case and they will kill every bird within a 5 mile radius.
The huge poultry barns notice a sick bird they kill all of them send all but a few hundred into the human food chain. Wait a few weeks start over.
Sigh all the regulation protect the big business

Re: Bird Flu
We have similar rules here - and I agree that they only protect agrobusiness. It's the curse of the lobby system where science no longer counts.

Re: Bird Flu
I wouldn't get too upset about the hype. A realistic scenario for a bad avian flu mutation is that a high percentage of susceptible birds die, in turn making the cost of poultry go up for a few years. (If you are so selective in what you eat that it is only bird products, and you refuse to change, then you'd have a problem) There will be some that are resistent and the progeny from them will probably also be resistent. The population will rebound. That's the way it has always been. Avian flu is called Avian because it affects birds. It would have to mutate pretty bad to become widely pathogenic for people with a normal immune system. Is it theoretically possible? Yes. Is it theoretically possible that I will suddenly develope the ability to walk through walls? Yes. Is it likely? No, very no. There are much worse things out there than Avian flu (like politicians). This is hype to keep people's attention away from other more important matters. Just wash your hands (like I'm sure your grandmother told you)after handling any animals, and before every meal.
