Re: Bird Flu

Avian flu is no big deal for the average farmer, true. It kills a few birds (that's why we don't eat animals that drop dead), and that's it. It doesn't touch humans because it's basically a harmless virus living in ducks.

The problem are the large chicken operations. That's where the virus gets enough time to become very dangerous, and very infective. And as chicken share one "docking station" in the lungs with humans, that's where Avian flu "learns" to infect humans.

It's scary because polititians don't want to accept the consequences of those studies. They refuse to shut down the chicken factories, and regulate the small farmers instead, blaming them. Agrobusiness is the agent creating bird flu that's dangerous for humans. So you are right, Ranting: The really dangerous people are polititians.

Re: Bird Flu

yes and no, yes about the politicians and how they are in the pocket of big business and they make up stuff to try to make people more dependant on big business. No on the risk of the giant chicken ranches making a virus "learn" to infect people. When bird flu goes through one of those places it basically puts them out of business because the animals are so cooped up that they can't help but get infected. The big businesses also are not going to take the time to see which ones are immune and will simply incinerate the whole lot, which in time prevents the offspring from getting immunity because the immune ones don't breed. In the long run those places basically prevent a given species of livestock from naturally developing immunity and so do ultimately increase the risk of the disease. Maybe we are saying the same thing afterall?
