We were loosely Southern Baptist, but didn't really practice the religion at home. The only thing I've ever really come across was when I was in the convent. They always made hot cross buns for Good Friday. It was traditional to have these at lunch, and then fast until after the Saturday evening service. For me, most special foods are more about family and memories than anything else. German Chocolate Cake, which was my dads favorite. Pumpkin pie and sweet potatoe pie at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Chocolate Easter bunnies. They just give you that warm deep down feeling because of their associations. To this day, whenever I'm sick, I have to have pizza, because my mom would take us out for pizza whenever we had to go to the doctor *laughs*.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Babadski)Tue, 10 Apr 2007 14:06:59 +0000 Re: Foods: Are there any with special meanings?https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221648,from=rss#post221648https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221648,from=rss#post221648Actually, the black eyed pea thing isn't Pagan specific (not that it matters here)..my mother has to have her black eyed peas at new years..and she's Christian extroidinare!!! LOL. has to go with greens of some kind, and I think there's something else, but can't remember what it is... (old age ) I like your holiday tradition, rather than a huge meal that takes 3 days to prepare, and 3 more to clean up after. It's a nice thing!! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf)Mon, 09 Apr 2007 22:28:55 +0000 Re: Foods: Are there any with special meanings?https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221646,from=rss#post221646https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221646,from=rss#post221646Not sure if this is what you mean exactly, but my family has certain special foods. We eat black-eyed peas on New Year’s for good luck. You are supposed to eat 7, but I think I always managed to cram in more! We eat “breakfast tacos” for almost all holiday brunches. They are soft tacos that you fill yourself with a mixture of potatoes, fake-meat (usually morning star sausage), poblanos, onions and spices. Extras include sour cream, monterrey jack, queso ranchero, avocados and salsa. We like to eat in the late morning and then spend the rest of the day hanging out together (instead of having holiday dinners). Sorta unrelated, but the fake-meat got me thinking. My mom used to make gluten slices for our sandwiches when I was little. They were battered and fried. I told everyone at school that they were cow’s tongues. I didn’t have many friends nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Mon, 09 Apr 2007 21:00:56 +0000 Foods: Are there any with special meanings?https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221562,from=rss#post221562https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221562,from=rss#post221562The only one I can think of right off, is the egg, and what it signifies during Ostara. Fertility....new beginnings. Oh..and the apple, if cut cross ways, rather than from top to bottom....it has a 5 pointed star in the center, which I think is pretty cool. Makes one wonder now, if the use of the apple in the story of Adam and Eve doesn't have some Pagan connotations (did I spell that right?). Is there anything else. I may know of more, but they're just not coming to me at the moment. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf)Mon, 02 Apr 2007 18:34:20 +0000
