I just realized that I've been into the homesteading/farming lifestyle for 40 of my 55 yrs. Maybe it's just me but discussing life experiences by decades makes me sound so old. nondisclosed_email@example.com (snowdancer1952)Mon, 16 Apr 2007 15:47:07 +0000 Re: I'm moving to the country!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221696,from=rss#post221696https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221696,from=rss#post221696snowdancer1952 When I had the dairy goats before I ran Jacobs sheep with them and never had a problem with hybrids or inter-species breeding. Jacobs shouldn't be a problem because for thousands of years goats and Jacobs have been run together. Any that would have had a problem were weeded out long ago. The sheep that tend to have the problem are those that for a very long time not been exposed to goats, so that there has been no selection pressure against the problem. Kathadin are a relatively new breed from a mix of other breeds. Genetically, I simply don't know if there would be a problem, but from a size standpoint, I doubt there will be any significant attempts at cross breeding nondisclosed_email@example.com (RantingHobbit)Sat, 14 Apr 2007 14:27:02 +0000 Re: I'm moving to the country!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221693,from=rss#post221693https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221693,from=rss#post221693RantingRabbit, I'm going to be running Katahdin sheep along with Nubian's & Alpine goats. I had a commercial goat dairy when I lived in WI and love both Nubian's & Alpines. Since I'm not interested in the fiber, Katahdin Hair Sheep fit the bill for my desire to have lamb for Greek recipes. When I had the dairy goats before I ran Jacobs sheep with them and never had a problem with hybrids or inter-species breeding. I'll be adding Dexter's to the mix once my Son & DIL get moved to MO with my grandson-I will be sharing meat, produce, milk and eggs with them since they're both Grad students and always on a tight budget. nondisclosed_email@example.com (snowdancer1952)Sat, 14 Apr 2007 05:58:29 +0000 Re: I'm moving to the country!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221689,from=rss#post221689https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221689,from=rss#post221689RantingHobbit wrote:  especially boar will breed with whatever stands still long enough. Now that I KNOW to be true! Someone had told me about the sheep/goat thing last year when I thought about getting some and I looked into it then. I wasn't a wikipedia person back then (I have to admit that I find it to be correct more often than not now) and so I checked out some vet and agricultural books from the library. One actually talked about it being a myth. But I didn't see any mention of a breed specific thing like the Morada Nova sheep. And one reference versus personal experience is really not saying much! Nature is weird... And science is weireder...the chimeras are fertile, but they are an entirely science made creature. Kinda creepy really. I came across them in the vet books too and what wikipedia has to say about them is pretty much right. It is certainly not an authoritative work on anything. I don't bother with it since it is so wrong, so often. Look in ANY veterinary text. Morada Nova sheep are the best for running with goats if you want some Geeps to eat. They are the closest genetically to goats and are run with the goats for this purpose in Angola, but they are not goats, so the offspring are sterile. Soay are probably the worst choice for running with goats, since the ewes tend to die in second trimester when impregnated by a Buck. Most breeds simply can't get pregnant by the other species, but it is worth checking with the breed association of whatever before you mix them. If they could have fertile offspring they would be the same species. That is the definition of species, the ability and desire to breed with resultant fertile offspring. Some species can interbreed with fertile offspring, but don't due to "cultural differences" like coyote, dogs and wolf, and so they are technically considered different species but they can and rarely do cross with fertile offspring. A ram, buck, boar, especially boar will breed with whatever stands still long enough. I saw one boar trying to mate a donkey. Well actually 2 boars tried, but the Jenny only liked the one boar TexasMadness wrote: Natural sheep-goat hybrids are actually extrememly uncommon! Now I'll be in the Jonesboro area, surrounded by fields of corn, soybeans & cotton. I named the little stray Clover. She's semi tame but every day she's getting braver. I think the regular feedings are helping; she was so pitifully thin. Her coat hid just how skinny she really was. nondisclosed_email@example.com (snowdancer1952)Wed, 11 Apr 2007 19:22:10 +0000 Re: I'm moving to the country!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221656,from=rss#post221656https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221656,from=rss#post221656Oh, that looks so lovely! The house is way out in the country; far enough that I will have to use satellite internet. There's 3 bedrooms, large living room, dining room, nice kitchen, 2 full baths and a utility room. Side deck, front porch big enough for 5-6 rockers and a 2 car open front garage. I have the use of 3-4 acres around the house, there's even more if I want it for pastures down the road about 1/4 mile. My landlord has already arranged meetings so the neighbors could meet me and I them. He told them that soon they'll be seeing goats, sheep and chickens over at my place. He also plowed and disced 3 big garden areas. There's mature fruit trees: pears, apples, plums, cherries & peaches. The blueberry bushes are huge! So the adventure begins again. I have to say, after losing my last farm/home due to the secret life & financial decisions that my husband had made without my knowledge -I really never thought the day would come when I'd be going back to the country. This is the best early birthday present I could have ever gotten. Now, I'll be able to start posting homestead news and pictures of all my new critters and gardening efforts.
