I've always had a reverence and love of nature. I've always thought use human beans were doing more harm to her than good. So Here I am. so far we've changed to cf bulbs and bought a car that gets 4x better millage than our truck. We are also trying to get away from the city and all the consumerism. have our own homestead, raise our own food, and do it as sustainable as we can. its a small step but if everyone went that far we'd start to make progress. OTOH the county would have more people.. There goes the neighborhood . lol    nondisclosed_email@example.com (pcdreams)Tue, 04 Sep 2007 04:43:17 +0000 Re: The Environment....https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221957,from=rss#post221957https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221957,from=rss#post221957*nods in agreement* a lot of little things add up to bigger things in the end nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf)Wed, 06 Jun 2007 01:14:08 +0000 Re: The Environment....https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221955,from=rss#post221955https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221955,from=rss#post221955People are killing the earth and unless every nation starts doing something..... If every country was like the US..this Earth would be dying much sooner. China is now sending up pollution every bit as bad as the US and it will get worse. First we need to stop making the remaining farm land in to congrete jungles. My hubby's wee car gets 40 to 43mpg..his motorcycle around 50mpg. I had to sell my wee car for a Van because of my health. But I bought the most safe and the one with the best gas mileage. It only gets 30mpg though. Hubby has to go to work everyday. But we only use the Van if I have to go somewhere or need to get 5 or more things or stops in town. We do without until then. Changed the light bulbs to those that only used 10Watts but gives out 75 to 95 Watts of light. We buy as much of our food from local farmers. Saves how much pollution we send to the land fill. We burn all paper..though only on cool rainy days. We do not use any toxic chemicals on the farm. Would be much easier to use Roundup..but it is so bad for the earth. There are some many things people can do but don't. Every little thing can make a difference.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bergere)Tue, 05 Jun 2007 15:39:22 +0000 Re: The Environment....https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221931,from=rss#post221931https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221931,from=rss#post221931I agree, Ranting, that, ultimately, the Earth will do fine with out people, but we can't exist without it. However, we aren't ensuring our own existance with the things we are doing that negatively affect the Earth and it's atmosphere. Negative doesn't always mean total destruction, just a strong blight on this ball of dirt and rock. So, it's always preferable to do all we can to stop what we're doing wrong, to the best of our abilities, and maybe, in some way, help reverse the damage eventually (probably not in this lifetime...but in a lifetime somewhere down the road).nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf)Sat, 02 Jun 2007 20:00:47 +0000 Re: The Environment....https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221905,from=rss#post221905https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221905,from=rss#post221905Somehow I got this fractal theory type image of the Earth being a wet dog and people being the water. When there's just too many people the weather starts getting more and more extreme in every direction, like the dog spinning/ shaking to dry off. Once the Earth-dog is satisfied that it is not carrying around an excess of water-people then it moves on. The thing that most people inappropriately equate is the destruction of human civilization with the destruction of the Earth. The two are separate issues. The Earth will do fine ultimately without people, but not the reversenondisclosed_email@example.com (RantingHobbit)Fri, 25 May 2007 12:01:06 +0000 Re: The Environment....https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221745,from=rss#post221745https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221745,from=rss#post221745Dead cars are a boon to the atmosphere, but unfortunately, in this day and time, we almost gotta have a vehicle to get from point A to point B. I hope you can get it fixed soon. I'd be in a world of hurt if we had no vehicle. I can't walk the distance to town, or to more than one of my doctors...so, that's a must have.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf)Fri, 20 Apr 2007 17:44:23 +0000 Re: The Environment....https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221742,from=rss#post221742https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221742,from=rss#post221742I'm doing my part by not driving... because my car is dead. We use cotton bags for shopping, I always have one in the little backpack that doubles as my handbag. There's also always a bunch of them in the back of the car. Depending on the shop, we sometimes get plastic bags, but they are always reused as garbage bags, and I try not to take them.  nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Thu, 19 Apr 2007 21:36:54 +0000 Re: The Environment....https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221740,from=rss#post221740https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221740,from=rss#post221740Y'all are bringing up things that I'd not thought about, but that we do..lol...the low water toilet, planting trees, our plastic grocery bags, we reuse, either in our smaller trash cans, or, I use them to scoop the kitty box.....that's our trash bag for dirty litter. Since we don't own the property, or the cattle, we can't do much about keeping them away from the creeks. I always turn off my computer, turn out lights when I leave a room, unless I'm going right back into it. We heat with gas (propane), but we keep the heat turned down, everyone freezes at our house in the winter..lol. At night, we just pile on more blankets. I sleep better in a cool room. I wash in warm water, but rinse in cold. I don't waste water in the shower..I get in, get done what I need to do and get out. If I have to go into town, I'll do as much as I need to do while there, so I don't have to make a lot of trips. I MAY go to town twice a month, unless I have a doctor's visit or something. We don't use chemicals on the garden....I prefer a more healthy approach. And, hubby saved a maple sapling that was growing in a bush next to my side porch....he replanted it out in the yard. It's 2 years old now, and doing wonderfully. We want to plant some more trees. thankfully, our landlord doesn't mind us planting stuff. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf)Thu, 19 Apr 2007 21:02:39 +0000 Re: The Environment....https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221737,from=rss#post221737https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221737,from=rss#post221737No commercial cleaners No chemicals ~ grow our garden organic Trying to restore a creek bank Keep our cattle away from streams and creeks recycle or reuse everything I can Buy second hand yard sales & flea markets Combine trips Turning off anything electrical Heat water and home with wood Energy efficient appliances Low water washer ~ laundry in cold water Low water flushing toilet cover crop to prevent erosion Replanting of trees Send healing energy back into Mother Earth nondisclosed_email@example.com (playfultree)Thu, 19 Apr 2007 13:42:27 +0000 Re: The Environment....https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221731,from=rss#post221731https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221731,from=rss#post221731Good thoughts. I know I can face the world better if my house is in order (literally and figuratively) we have a small, tight house and try to heat mostly with wood. We have CF bulbs everywhere. These have really gotten better over the years. Their light isn't quite so blue and dim and depressing, Turn off computer screens when not using. Try to unplug everything and use surge protectors when you have stuff with a phantom load (like our stereo). I haven't used commercial cleaning stuff for many many years. At this point, the scent of the stuff is too much for me, not to mention what it'd do to my skin (edited to add: or what it does to the water table). We keep it pretty simple around the house - vinegar, water, green brand dish soap and laundry soap. SOme of the other green products are pretty nice too. I've been doing some cleaning for a friend and have been using some of the green products and have been impressed. nondisclosed_email@example.com (MagiCat)Tue, 17 Apr 2007 16:26:48 +0000 Re: The Environment....https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221730,from=rss#post221730https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221730,from=rss#post221730I've been checking what I do recently, since the weather is really going out of whack here, as well. I think I'm already pretty good. I walk to work. I turn off my computer at night. Most appliances are the best energy saving class we could get when we bought them. Our car is small and uses little fuel. We try to heat sparingly. I take care to buy vegetables that are grown in Germany and not transported from far away (no garden ...). If possible I get organic stuff. I should switch to an electicity company that offers electricity from renewable sources only. And I could buy shares in windparks or solar parks. So, there's still room for improvement. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Tue, 17 Apr 2007 14:55:05 +0000 The Environment....https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221728,from=rss#post221728https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p221728,from=rss#post221728Are we doing anything to help, or are we just hurting it more? I've noticed an alarming trend in our weather here. Not sure how anyone else's is, but ours is so off kilter it's not funny. We are not taking care of Mother, like we should. We are trashing our home. Maybe not WE we..but we as a collective race. What can we do to help? Keeping in mind that "charity begins at home" if you don't already, think about recycling. Old phonebooks, old books, newspapers, plastic bottles, etc. Keep your own home neat and tidy, if at all possible. How can we expect to keep Mother neat and tidy, if we can't keep our own homes that way? Don't drive any more than is necessary, unless you just HAVE to have a get'away day. Keep them few and far between ...that also helps you to enjoy them more, and appreciate the time you get for them. Teach your children/grandchildren, that littering is not a good thing. If my kids threw a lollipop stick out the car window, I'd turn around and go back..make them pick it up..assuming we could find it. If not that, then they had to pick up some other trash. Again, assuming we weren't in a huge hurry. Declutter your home.....how much in your home do you REALLY need? DH and I have been going thru closets and getting rid of clothes we don't or can't wear, books, videos, etc. We even downsized our TV stand from a full blown entertainment center, to just a TV stand. We love it so much better. gives us more options for furniture placement. More is not always better!!! These are just a very few things we can do to help. Start at home, and work your way out! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf)Tue, 17 Apr 2007 07:41:21 +0000
