No more roosters!

My roos went to their new home yesterday. They were annoying the neighbors and it was just a matter of time before they called the city on me. emoticon

I will miss Doodle Boy and Gobble Gut, but I don't think the girls will! They all came running out to see me this morning - something that Doodles had been keeping them from doing for the past few weeks. Hopefully I can hand tame some of them again. They have gotten really shy as I haven't handled them since Doodles figured out what his spurs were for! Hmmm...maybe I'm not going to miss him after all! Gobbles was a sweety though! emoticon

The hens most likely will feel less stressed when the rooster is gone.

My first thought at the title of the thread was that the roosters had raped a hen to death, and so that had been a few executions from the swift hatchet of the law.

LOL Ranting!!

Texas....hopefully the girls will be a bit less shy now. And, possibly lay better. I know that when I had chickens, the hens tended to lay more eggs when the roos were not present to aggrivate them.

Re: No more roosters!

I haven't noticed an increase in eggs yet - in fact numbers have been falling lately probably because it's starting to get chilly (that means 60F here in Texas!). Today I noticed that one of the shyer girls has real signs of treading on her back - missing feathers and some red, raw skin. She had her head in a bucket and didn't see me coming so I was able to pick her up and check her out! I hadn't noticed before because she never came to me when I fed the hens. Glad those boys are gone!

Ranting, Doodles was good about 'wooing' his hens but Gobbles was a raper. The squawking was horrible!

Sounds like time to gobble Gobbles. Too many roosters is as bad as too many foxes in the henhouse. From what I've seen, one rooster per ten hens is plenty. That was the broody hens can take care of the eggs and chicks and the non broody hens will keep the rooster otherwise occupied
