Ars Almadel

I recently learned about a very interesting pagan ritual. Is has not survived the ages with much popularity and it appears to be not in most modern Wiccans practice but I found it intriguing nonetheless. The information is contained within the fourth book of the Lesser Key of Solomon (a 17th century grimoire) called Ars Almadel.

The Ars Almadel contains a description of how to construct four almadels for summoning the Angels of the four cardinal directions (called the four altitudes in the text). An almadel consists of a 4 inch square tablet of wax with holy names and symbols inscribed thereon.

The tablet has four holes in the corners and is placed on small protruding feet halfway up 4 candles made from the same wax. An earthen censor is placed underneath the tablet such that smoke can rise through the holes. The Angel is said to manifest in this smoke or in a golden seal placed on the tablet.

Each almadel for the directions or altitudes must be of a specific color:

The colour of the Altitude belonging to the first Altitude, or Chora, is lilywhite; the second Chora a perfect red rose colour; the third Chora is to be a green mixed with a white silver colour; the fourth Chora is to be black mixt with a little green or a sad colour.

I like making things and this sounds like a neat project. Once I get myself more organized, I might try constructing them. You can find the entire text online – which includes descriptions of what each altitude is responsible for. Very interesting!
