Maybe if they (govenment they) re-assessed the current rules and fundings, and applied the rules appropriately rather than all screwed up - the people that are truely disabled could get their disability the first time or two. And are the families of those disabled helping them?

The system we currently have (Medicaid/Medicare) is really not all that bad in principle. But the government has basically wrecked it at the moment. I agree with you that the first step should be to get those programs running properly. See how that goes. If that doesn't solve the problem, then look at Universal Health Care. Plenty of other countries do it, so it is possible. But it would be a big change and probably take a long time. We should focus on fixing what we have first!

I agree that what we have in place now is totally messed up.....and if it's possible to fix it properly, then I say go for it!

The problem there is, and has been, there are those who get on the government health care that really don't need it. That's what messed Medicaid up so badly.
Here in TN, we have what is called TennCare. It's like Medicaid, but it's replaced Medicaid. There were so many people who shouldn't have been on it, that were...and those who really needed it, couldn't get on it. So...the state took it away from a lot of people...some who really needed it and were actually able to get on it. For instance. My sister and her husband have no insurance. She is in very poor health, and was on TennCare at one time. She is one of the ones that lost it. Me, I applied for TennCare for my youngest daughter when she lived with us. and she was approved (she was under 18), and for some stupid reason, when she got it...they gave it to me as well...and I had private insurance as well as Medicare. I didn't need it. I even called Nashville to tell them I needed to be taken off. As far as I know..I'm STILL on it. I was told that once you're on, it's hard to get taken off. That is BULL! The system is screwed up, and not just here in TN.
If there were a more stringent application process, then perhaps it would be harder to mess it up. I think, maybe, if you have to prove your disabled (your disabiliy papers) and can't work, or that you are working, but aren't given the option to get insurance, then you may qualify. If you are not working, and not actively looking for work and you're able to work, then you shouldn't be able to get government assistance. If you are not working and ARE actively looking for work, then you should be able to qualify. Same goes for food stamps. These people who are not willing to work, but are able to, I don't feel should be qualified for government assistance of any kind. Just my opinion. And I know that kind of goes against my whole thing of Universal Health Care, but at least with that, everyone would be on equal footing...it wouldnt be one person versus another, like it is with Medicaid/TennCare.

As for a large amount taken out of wages...I don't think the amount is that large. Really no more than is taken out for insurance now. We pay $240+ a month for family health insurance (just for 2 of us). I'd be willing to keep paying that for Universal, if we had to. If it meant that some child somewhere was able to have medical insurance. And the thing with Universal is..it not only covers medical, it also covers dental, and I think vision....which you have to pay extra for with most employer based insurances. I know we do with DH's insurance.

Ah, you're paying $240 a month for insurance, I'm paying about $20 a month, for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, prescription, and glasses.... but thru the company I work for.

Basically I'm not for the usual thought when someone says Universal Health Care, I'm for shaking a knot in the tail of this current system then re-looking.

And as for other countries having UHC, they have other socialist tendencies also. That's not what America is, but it maybe be adjusting to somewhat.

I'm sorry S is having all those health problems, but I know she has had jobs that had Blue Cross/Blue Shield and gave them up to work with her hubby, so her coverage is somewhat her own decision. And with her hubby selling old persons health plans, I think she should be much better informed than most. I'm sorry her TennCare is messed up for her.

S didn't exactly give up the jobs with the benefits. Her health took such a toll on her she didn't have much choice but to give them up (same situation as me). And yes, you'd think with Beej selling insurance they'd be able to figure something out, but, the cost of insurance is so high that even what he sells, they can't afford on their own, and they don't get any benefits thru Humana...which, personally, sucks. You'd think an insurance company would take care of their people.

We'd not know how to act if we only paid (well, for the both of us) $40 a month for insurance, with vision. We are on BC/BS also, but it's a different plan and it's really wearing down the SSC employees. The company keeps changing the benefits, without any notice to the employees, and I, for one, will be doing some rather loud yelling about it if they do this one more time. We don't find out about the changes until one of us has to go to the doctor....and we're very unprepared at that point, for a glitch to be tossed at us like that.

Anyway...if there IS a way to fix what we have now, and make it work properly...then I say....go for it. But...I seriously doubt you can get all the insurance companies and the government on the same page..hence the problems we are having now. Things need to be better regulated.
