Full Moon
I am trying to increase my knowledge of traditions - new and old - that pertain to natural world around us. While I have always been fascinated by the moon, I have largely been unaware of the folklore surrounding it. But I am striving to remedy my ignorance!
Today is the Full Moon of July. I found two differing descriptions of it - either the Buck Moon or the Mead Moon:
Male deer, or bucks, grow their first antlers during this month, thus the name buck moon. This is a very masculine moon, so it's a good time to work on the physical things in your life. Either physical in body, or things that some physical attention, like fixing the loose handle on the kitchen drawer.
July’s full moon is often referred to as the Mead, Blessing, Lightning or Thunder moon. The energies around this moon are ones of success, appreciating what we have worked hard for, reaping the first harvests and celebrating our successes. We are encouraged to appreciate our accomplishments and begin to put energy into building on them.
As I strive towards a more Central Texas based paganism, I find that neither of these really fits. The deer around here are in the middle of their antler growing season (about March to September). First harvests? Corn is harvested in mid-June around here. Thunderstorms? HA!
I've been trying to keep a journal of the natural happenings around me so that I can fit things in. The only thing I can come up with this month is the Drought Moon! Which actually might fit. Next week starts a series of ancient Greek festivals celebrating the gods and goddess of water. I've read that it was because this time of year can be really hard because of drought. So maybe for me, July will be the Drought Moon.
Any one else celebrate the phases of the moon and the specific moons?

Re: Full Moon
When our coven was together, we did celebrate the moons, but to be honest, at this very moment, I can't recall what is what..lol. Isn't that sad?
We had ritual at, or as close to, a full moon if at all possible, every month. We would talk about what Diety was associated with what, and usually do a ritual using that particular God/dess. Sometimes, it may have been nothing more than blessing our tools, preparing candles for the year (Candlemass), etc.
I'll have to go through my study journals and see if I can find any other information. I've been way too lax in my studies and I am a bit embarrassed by that.
Maybe I can get back on track, and we can compare notes!

Re: Full Moon
And the learning never stops! I am still learning as well...and it's nice to be able to learn from each other. That's part of what a coven does! So..sure, why not....an Online Coven.
