New health news issues

As you (may) know, we are holistic healers, being college trained as well as traditional stuff.. This means we tend to be in the 'alternate loop' when it comes to news updates; most of these are not too mind blowing, so I tend not to 'go public' most of the time, but. . . This time the news is rather worrying.

Vegetable Oil.
The latest massive research programs instigated by 'alternative' health professionals has discovered close links to many syndromes, not least cardiovascular disease, BP problems, and scary scary - proven causes of macular degeneration. It would seem that the use of such supposedly healthy oils are causing an epidemic of macular degeneration - prior to the commonplace use of vegetable oils, in the 30s and early 40s, macular degeneration was completely unheard of - occasionally a doctor would hear of one case in thirty years, so not much was known about the disease; however, with the onset of vegetable oil use, the disease became more commonplace, until now, when over 30% of those over the age of 65 have a debilitating occurrence of the disease and over 60% of the population over 85 are suffering from it. Blindness is the result of this disease and is becoming much more common in the elderly

Tests have shown that removing vegetable oils from the diets of sufferers, makes symptoms reduce. This is rather scary, as for years, the producers and the health care professionals have touted mono and poly unsaturated fats / vegetable oils as the way to go. They are WRONG. Please carefully research anything you can find about this, and try finding alternatives..

The alternatives that I am hearing the best news and reports of are: Unrefined coconut oil, Unrefined macadamia nut oil, Virgin Olive oil and Unrefined Palm oil. Research by the 'alternate' bunch recommend these oils, and I have been using them for many years - A cousin, who refused to accept the health benefits of my advice has very bad macular degeneration, undergoing surgery that very nearly blinded her, and eating what the doctor ordered - heart healthy vegetable oils. She also has very high BP, and serious cardiovascular disease. I copied this text to an email to her; hopefully this time she will listen. ( she was converted to christianity by her first husband, who raped her children, and killed himself in jail.)

I will continue to research this latest report I received, all 65 pages of it, and let you all know of other things related to it.

Thanks, that's very good to know. Of course, much use of vegetable oils is in "margerine", which has replaced butter as a "healthy" alternative.

So, back to olive oil, it is. emoticon

Salt:

It would appear that contra to popular belief of not so long ago, Salt is not the culprit responsible for the worldwide spread of Blood Pressure issues. Though salt had been identified as common to the diet of the majority of sufferers, it has come to be understood that when a common link was found, no other research was undertaken. Kind of typical in this day and age....

Further research in Sweden, Germany, the UK and Italy suggest that salt is not bad, but good, providing it was not used to excess. Vegetable Oils are now understood to be bad for BP issues, along with the rest of Syndrome X problems, and exacerbated by large doses of salt.

Suggested amounts of salt seem to be 'don't add salt on your plate, use it to cook things, so it is dissolved within dishes rather than concentrated in granules.

As I have never liked the taste of salt, so never used it on my plate, this does not make life any different for me, but for others, go easy on the raw salt, and use it for cooking. But. . . If no veggie oils are used, presumably salt is ok on the plate - don't have clarity on that one.. More research needed.

We've always preferred olive oil over all others. Though I do use other oils at times - most notably sesame and peanut for asian foods. I do have soybean oil in the cupboard too from the mayo experiments but otherwise, that's it.

In general, I feel that any refined, concentrated food should be eaten in moderation. So oil fits in to that.

I prefer olive oil for most of my cooking. It just doesn't taste all that good in cornbread, so I do use a small amount of canola oil there.

thanks for posting this for us, muladzh.

Saijen, have you tried "light olive oil"? It's not "light" in the sense of low-fat, but in the sense of color and taste. Extra-virgin olive oil is that nice dark color with a hint of green. It has a very pronounced taste. Light olive oil is nearly the same color as canola oil. It's flavor is much milder.

I tried extra virgin in baking once. Blech! But the light olive oil works just great!

Re: New health news issues

We have just discovered a fantastically light flavored extra virgin olive oil called " Olio Beato " with the word "Demarco" below that on the label. It is organic, and not cheap - we paid $18 for 25.5 fl oz, which is about double some prices, but. . . . We put an order in at the store, for a case of it today.. It is the lightest, sweetest tasting olive oil I have ever tasted - would that I had made the last batch of mayo with it.. emoticon Without doubt, the next will be.

I've not even seen the light, but then I've not exactly looked for it. I'll have to see if I can find some next time I go to the store. It's just so much better for you than vegetable oil is.

Thanks Texas emoticon
