Doll Bed

My "niece" is asking for a very cute American Doll bed for Christmas...but it's $180!!! Her mom has asked if we (my dad and I) can build one and sew the fabrics and such. We need to get on this project pronto if it's going to be done in time! I'm headed to the fabric store tomorrow to see if I can find anything similar. We'll be busy little elves!

It's done! We got "permission" for some pretty heavy artistic license - just needed to be a hippie type American Doll bed. I think it turned out pretty great!

Kitty cat Mo also approved of the bed! emoticon

I would GLADLY pay $180 for this bed after having made one! emoticon It was a lot of fun to make though, and certainly will be a much more special gift that she has a one-of-a-kind bed...but no doll bed making business for me!

Firle, it's for an American Girl Doll...which you probably don't have over there! They are 18" tall. Each doll is a character with a background story. This is for Julie Albright - a girl who grows up in San Fransisco in the 70s.

Re: Doll Bed

madness is that bed about 22" long? It should be. Did you have a doll to use to try it out.?

It does look good. Saijen's dad made bed for my daughter's AM Girl doll years ago, then in the last few years one for an AM Girl look alike doll that I was dressing for someone.

The Springfield dolls, are Am Girl look alikes, and I have 3 of those that I used in Nutcracker on Ice. They are fun to sew for.

You did a really good looking job on the bed. I think the young girl will enjoy it a lot.

Yes, the mattress was around 22" (can't remember exactly what now). We were able to get the exact dimensions of the store-bought bed so we built it to those specs exactly!

I think doll stuff of this size is a really cool way to practice for other things. The smaller dolls (barbie, etc) just bring on such a challenge because they are SO small. But maybe I should look more into this size for some projects!

Re: Doll Bed

Madness - do research on the prices the furniture for Am Girl dolls gets. Even the 'inexpensive' versions.

Might be worth investigating. And people who purchase the $80 - $90 American Girl dolls, with the $25 to $30 outfits, etc have money to spend. Or the kind that saves for quality.

But, there are the ones like me, that barely could get the doll for daughter and then made the clothes (I have the original patterns) and have family to make furniture. Decent furniture that did not cost an arm and a leg probably has a market.

Barbies are difficult to make nice things for. I just sent off a Barbie wardrobe for a little girl.

Re: Doll Bed

Texas...that bed is amazing! I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner.

Fenyx has made some of the most gorgeous Barbie clothes. My youngest daughter still has many of the ones that Fenyx made for her. They are packed in a suitcase along with her Barbie dolls, all in storage at the moment I think. Or either at her Dad's...not sure which, but I'm thinking storage.

I THINK I remember when Dad made that bed for Fenyx's daughter. Give my Dad a piece of wood and tell him what you want...he'll make it or die trying, I tell ya!! He's done some very intricate work as well, with wood. He enjoys working with wood and has a nice shop behind his house with all kinds of tools and saws and goodies...lol. He's always been good with his hands, either doing that kind of work, or working with plants (we had the prettiest yard in the neighborhood when I was growing up)....he's just a wiz. Too bad I didn't get that part of his creativity.

Y'all did an excellent job, Texas..you and your Dad. And I'd think working on a project like that would bring people even closer together. emoticon
