Becky....I've been 'learning' for going on 2 years, from my Son and from an old member here and I've only used ONE ritual...the one to find my animal spirit (a very simple one)...I won't even try any of the others. (Though at times, I have been sorely tempted). I would first find myself a teacher, one who has been teaching for a minimum of 20 years plus (preferably an older High Priestess with a long lineage), and start with the very smallest of steps...and still it would be at least a year before I'd be ready to do any ritual. You seriously need to have your Spirit guide inside and you must have protections built before trying any ritual.
For they are exceptionally powerful when done either right......or wrong. 
And if you do not know PRECISELY what Playful means with every word here:
And please do at least the miminal self protection.
Always when you are trying a new ritual/spell Take a moment and think about what you are about to do who and how it will effect you and others.
Are you ready for the Karma or result you are asking for???
White Light yourself or use whatever protection method you prefer.
Then PLEASE do not try any ritual...there are so many "neo-goth" young... so called witches and wizards out there trying spells and rituals....and harming themselves, physically, emotionally and harming those around them...that THAT it's almost an epidemic...thanks to shows that glorify such things. Son and his student just buried a young girl....she bought a "Book of Shadows" at an estate sale....(he estimated it to be at least 300 years old, it's now in secure hands)...this young woman was trying to "fit in" with the goth gang here. She's dead. And all her family knows is that she took some kind of herb and had a bad reaction....
I'm not trying to scare you...on the contrary, I 'feel' your strength, I find you to be a fascinating and wonderful woman with a need to know and I enjoy your company immensely! And I'm more than willing to answer anything I can. I just wanted to add my warning to the others here. You can not go practicing rituals, when you do not understand from whence they come. As I've found...there really is no 'shortcut'..

Thanks Queeny, you are the best. I really don't think I'll be doing any rituals. I just find reading about them interesting. Just as I do reading about the darker side of beliefs and rituals. I enjoy reading about black magic but I'm not going to try it.

Oh they are incredibly fascinating! I love reading them too....I'll probably end up being an "Solitary" the rest of my life and never actually get into any rituals, because I will probably never find a teacher or join a coven. My husband is not so open minded as yours! 
But it's fascinating and fun, isn't it?
I could sit for hours and talk to my son....he is qualified to perform rituals and spells and he does and uses some mighty powerful herbs...which at first freaked me out a bit, but I've grown used to him talking as such. 
But he's the most fascinating creature to talk to...Not many Moms can say that about their kid! 
You keep reading. I think you will find the Pagan/Wiccan religions quite fascinating and their are hundreds of different Pagan Religions. Some of the best known are Buddhism, Shintoism, Native American Religions, Hinduism, Taoism, Wicca, Druidism, Asatru, Shamanism, Neo-Paganism and Eclectic Paganism.
So enjoy yourself....and ask away!
