Re: 2011 canning season has begun!!!

I had tomatoes that were picked several days ago, sitting on some outside tables and going to rot. [sign in to see URL], my SIL and I set up a mini kitchen on my front porch. We grabbed our 4 foot folding table, taped a cut up plastic garbage bag down to the top, pulled out 3 big bowls and one med. size bowl, 2 knives, the blender and my chopper and we processed tomatoes on the front porch!!! Out of the already picked tomatoes and 2 more buckets full we picked, we got about 6-7 gallon bags of puree'd tomatoes and 2.5 gallon bags of chopped tomatoes and it all went into the freezer to use later for tomato juice and homemade vegetable soup. We got most of the tomatoes picked, but had to finally give it up, as we were both hurting so bad. We spent about 2 and a half - 3 hours processing those tomatoes. We had one bowl to wash them in, one bowl for parts we couldn't use (bad spots, core,. etc) and the other 2 bowls were used to hold cut up chunks waiting for the blender or chopper. We left about a bit less than a quarter of the row unpicked. DH will have to deal with those later on. Guess I know what I'll be doing once the work is done in the kitchen and back door!!!!! emoticon

There was no way I was going to let that many tomatoes ruin, so I'm thankful that the Goddess saw fit to give us a wonderful day, weather-wise, to get that much work done. The temps couldn't have been better and the humidity was at a perfect [sign in to see URL] too sticky, not too dry.

My SIL tried to tell me she had come up with the idea, but didn't say anything (I know better!) because she figured if I wanted to do that, I'd come up with the idea on my own. [sign in to see URL]. (I'm a bit aggrivated at her and my BIL at the [sign in to see URL] the help they've given [sign in to see URL] him than her) emoticon

More corn.... landlord picked about 2 Walmart bags of Silver Queen. DH and I got it shucked, I washed it, and DH cut it off the cob. We ended up with a rather full 1 gallon freezer bag of whole kernel corn. It will go into our vegetable soup when we get ready to make it.

Queeny, I love my BIL and SIL very much, and we appreciate their help so very much, but, we can't have anything special around, food or drink wise when they are here.
I had bought me some diet Snapple blended [sign in to see URL] was peach, pear and mango. I bought a 6 pack, and got half of 1 bottle! DH got one whole bottle. out of 6 bottles of the diet Snapple Peach tea, I got 2 bottles. Now, we don't drink sodas around here anymore, so I bought some diet Cokes for them, cause I know they like those, and I had 24 bottles of Lipton Green [sign in to see URL] know they'll drink that. I bought some bags of those marshmallow circus [sign in to see URL] were 3 bags, one was open already, but my BIL didn't bother to see if any were open, he just grabbed one and opened it. I told them where stuff was to make sandwiches, where chips were, etc. We pretty much fed them 2-3 meals a day for 5 [sign in to see URL] we anticipated [sign in to see URL] had no problem [sign in to see URL] was part of our way of saying thank you for the help, but they don't ask before they just take anything.
My [sign in to see URL] fixed each of a bag of popcorn. We were watching the moving Mama Mia and I got to watching her. She would stuff so much popcorn into her mouth at one time, she couldn't close her mouth all the way to chew! I noticed she did the same thing later in the day. We went and got us all a burger, fries and drink, and she'd stuff 5-6 fries at a time into her mouth then take a bite of burger. I kept waiting for her to choke. This is DH's brother and his [sign in to see URL] DH's entire family, with the exception of his oldest sister, is like this. They just rummage through cabinets, fridge, drawers, whatever, looking for stuff to eat, and it doesn't matter if it's the last one of something, if they want it, they just take it. Don't bother to [sign in to see URL] take.
Last night, DH and I had to stop and get more drinks. I got 2 12count packs of mixed berry green tea and hid one, got an 8count pack of diet mt dew for them, got 2 types of cookies for [sign in to see URL] for us, I got some jelly beans and small payday candy [sign in to see URL], we hid! I feel awful that I have to hide stuff from family, but dang it, my DH works just as hard for his money to buy groceries with as they do for theirs. BIL is, for all intents and purposes, [sign in to see URL] not officially. My SIL works for our landlord's wife, sitting overnight with her elderly mother. They aren't bringing in a whole lot, but neither are we. Anyway, I was just extremely aggrivated with feeling like we were being used as a meal ticket, and then some. I hope it gets [sign in to see URL]'s still more work to be done! I'll just have to hide what I don't want made available to them, I guess. emoticon

Re: 2011 canning season has begun!!!

Oy, that would annoy me a lot! I have a hard time grabbing food outside of meals when I'm visiting, even if my family tells me to take what I want. Sometimes, I'd rather go hungry or buy stuff on my own. I usually drink tap water, to avoid that problem, too, and if there is fruit juice, I mix it with water.

I can see where it grates to have to hide special things - especially if people just rummage around your cabinets! Eeek.

Still, if the whole family is that way, they must have learned to behave like that somewhere. Maybe cramming food like they do was the only way to feel good or satisfied. It's sad to have to watch that (it cannot be healthy) but there usually is a reason behind behaviour like this. And maybe they don't even see it as problem!

Still, I hope you can find ways of dealing with this and still enjoying their help and their company.

I'm afraid you should keep hiding your stuff [sign in to see URL] DO NOT FEEL GUILTY about it! emoticon

I hope it gets [sign in to see URL]'s still more work to be done!

Because I do not believe it will get any better, to late for that. I don't think they were ever taught any kind of 'manners'...and that is sad, but happens a lot! emoticon

Firle, they don't see it as a problem. They don't realize they even do it, I don't think. My BIL did tell my SIL to buy some drinks while we were out the other day, so, she got 2 2 liter bottles of Mtn Dew. They opened one, and I put it in the fridge to get cold. The other day, my BIL and I were the only ones [sign in to see URL] came in to fix a sandwich, and didn't bother to look in the fridge to see if there was alread a bottle [sign in to see URL] just opened the one on the counter. So, I ended up with 2 open bottles of [sign in to see URL] same exact same thing in each bottle. DH finished one of them off today so there is only one in there now. These people don't think to look to see what is or isn't already [sign in to see URL] just grab and if it's not open, they open it! I had an entire bag of cookies get soggy because of that. High humidity here so things don't last long once they're opened. I had to toss an almost full package of cookies in the trash. Couldn't give em to the [sign in to see URL] had chocolate in them!

Queeny, you're probably right. They are all over 40, so it's doubtful they'll change at this late stage. One can hope, [sign in to see URL].
