Re: Life on the new Homestead!!!!!

Muladzh, I got a happier vibe from you than I've gotten in a LONG time.....made my heart feel good!!! emoticon
I'm so glad that, despite all the mouses, things are progressing very well, and you and Frog are having a good time putting your homestead together.

I would also love to hear you play. About all I've played lately are some of my harmonicas, messed around with my penny whistle and that's it. My keyboard..I have no place for it right now, so it's put away (wrapped up and under the guest bed), and I still haven't gotten my dulcimer restrung...something I reallllllly need to do, but need to find someone who can restring it and won't charge me an arm and leg to do it. I'll have to go to either Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg most likely, and I just don't have the energy to go down there. Maybe one weekend when DH and I are both feeling pretty decent and I can actually find a place that restrings them. That's the hardest part...finding someone who knows how to restring a dulcimer. You'd think if they can do a guitar or banjo, they could do a dulcimer. No difference..it's just 4 strings instead of 6....and mine is actually strung with banjo strings, so it's not like some alien wire.....I'll get it fixed eventually. I really miss it most of all of my instruments other than my drum (which is still not fixed, either).

Dad loved wood working. He had a nice shop with a concrete floor and all kinds of saws and things. My cousin's hubby got some of them, and my DH got the rest. Now, if my DH just had a place to set them up and actually be able to use them like he wants. LOL.... all he has is a small workshop that belongs to the landlord, gravel floor, and it's PACKED to the gills with junk from the landlord, including a torn apart tractor that's right in the middle. It's been there for at least 18 months, if not longer. Out of sight, out of mind, basically.
What kinds of things do you make, when you're not making shelving and such?

So glad to see you being happy, Muladzh!

Mhm, I'm a little surprised at the chickens not laying eggs. Admittedly, it is fall now, and days are short. My sister has some (shared with her direct neighbor), and they seem to have been laying well into fall. Not sure if they are still doing so, though.

Have fun with the tractors! emoticon

We have lazy chickens.. they are not laying because they don't want to. That is ok by me.

Dulcimers are not difficult to restring. Actually no string instrument is difficult to restring - you really could do it yourself. There will be videos on YouTube that show how. I just restrung my ukulele, without the benefit of YouTube. emoticon

I fixed some bongo drums last week - that was fun.

I have been rodent proofing furniture, by finishing them. In times gone by, in Scotland, ALL furniture had bases to keep out the mice, but now it seems that they cut costs in everything, making cheap nasty furniture that is incomplete, so I get to remake them.

I need to make some bookcases, a bed for SIL, a wardrobe for us, a couple of tables, some fence styles, some gates, a couple of doors, some window frames, a new room enclosing the porch, and put the laundry out there, I want a low ottoman, for the couch, some ornate mirrors, some new picture frames, curtain supports and such, and a desk for my computers. That should keep me happy for a couple of months.

Interesting. My old desk has bases, so mice would have a hard time getting into it, except I always leave the front doors open. emoticon

Fortunately, there are no mice up on the forth floor of this house.

But this year, I've actually been using a moskito net over my bed. Somehow, a new kind of moskito has arrived here, huge with black and white legs. They seem to be normal in Northern Europe, but I've never seen them before. At any rate, they didn't bite me.

All the best for your chickens, maybe they just need to feel more at home.

Your woodworking plans sound wonderful. I never had much of a chance to learn about it, but I think I could enjoy working with wood like that. For now, I'll stick to wordsmithing as craft, though.

Working with your hands in making things is the best kind of therapy there is. Wood can come alive, when worked... emoticon
I find it totally hilarious that you have "lazy, solar powered chickens" emoticon

Never heard of a lazy chicken...LOL. Guess there's a first time for everything!! emoticon

Muladzh, it sounds like you've got a good amount of projects to keep you busy, at least for a little while. Good stuff, Brother!!! I'm so glad that you're settling in and finding all the potential that's in your new place.

I'm sure I could restring the dulcimer, if I took a strong enough notion to do it, but, since I have to get the strings for it anyway, and probably need to either take the strings with me, or just take the entire thing, I figured it would be better for me to have it professionally done the first time....letting me watch, so the next time I'd feel more comfortable doing it myself. As for tuning it, that's not a problem. It's a four string, with 3 of those being D....2 in the same octave, 1 of the next higher octave, and the 4th string is the A between the 2...so, it's a D A D for now. I can always change it, but I've been told that D A D is the norm for the players in this area. what I'd LOVE to do is find someone who teaches the correct way to play, and take some lessons. I may request that as my b'day present from DH....to help me find a place to take lessons. I'd have to go to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg most likely, but if it were just once a week, or every other week, it shouldn't be too bad. I just looked, and found one in Pigeon Forge. It's a bit of a drive (about an hour and a half one way), but may be worth it to learn the right way to play. Can't hurt to talk to some people and get some pricing..... emoticon

Re: Life on the new Homestead!!!!!

Between the intense rain, flooding the workshop, writing in the NaNo endeavor, working hard fixing things, and trying to learn things, I have not had much time to think about posting here. The rain has been awesome, 9 inches in two days, and the workshop floods somewhat, due to the seller's neglect of simple principles. If you add dirt to ground, it changes the way it drains. Come month end, I need to buy a grader/scraper blade for the tractor, and remove all the dirt from the yard in front of the shop. Nothing got damaged except the manky carpet that the tractors are parked on. Local areas have not been so lucky - Chehalis has two rivers that don't behave themselves, and both are expected over the flood stage today. It has been somewhat windy too, which proved the big tree outside needs something doing to it. I would like to take it's top off, but I think I many have to remove it altogether - the wind had it's lower boughs clouting the roof. That is a not very nice noise to hear in the night.
The chickens caught a mouse, pecked it to death than threw it away.. I don't just have solar powered chickens, I have chickens that think they are cats.

I definitely do not like the daylight saving time - had it have been normal time all year, the lack of light at silly times would have been more natural. Going from brightness to darkness at the same time sucks. (having lived in Indiana, who didn't change it, and Arizona who don't either, this is a tad weird.)
The flea problem seems to be reducing - less scratches, less fleas found, less ending up in the flea traps. I do not think we could have got rid of them, had we not declared war on the carpets.. Still haven't finished decorating, so the floors are all bare concrete, excepting our room, which is about finished. I still have one piece of furniture to rodent proof, in there but I am being rather lazy and not doing it. Haven't seen evidence of mice recently, either.. I reckon they are still there, somewhere, but haven't pooped anywhere, or gnawed anything.

Before my SIL wandered off again, she hung a wind bell outside, so we have an almost constantly ringing bell out side; fortunately we like bells. We also have a neighbor with the quaint idea you need a cockerel to get eggs from chickens - so it is almost constantly screeching. All their chickens died, pecked raw by the cockerel, then eaten by their noisy puppy, so all they have is a frustrated cockerel, that the dog can't catch. Not for want of trying, hence the shrieking bird. and barking dog. Most of the time we do not hear the people, just when they roar around the six acres they have got, on a three wheel ATV. The guy seems to enjoy racing round the field, which spooks their horse, who races round kicking things, often the dog. Kind of Ma and Pa Kettle.. ( Last time we lived in Washington, we stayed one town over from Egg and I Road, where the original Ma and Pa Kettle stories originating. We knew the grandson of the farmer who the character was based on.)

That is about all my news from the homestead...

wow, you've had a lot to occupy you!

I'm glad the fleas seem to be on their way out and that the mouses are holding their peace. Sorry about those neighbors, though!

Yeah, unless you want to breed your own chicks, no need for a cockerel. And no need for a natural alarm clock, either. emoticon

My sister's chicken are doing fine on their own, and make rather comforting noises. I like their gentle braaaaking. Of course, the windchime also sounds lovely.

Good luck in restoring the yard so the workshop won't flood anymore. That old owner sounds well-meaning but a little ignorant - just like the neighbors.

One of my friends had a horrible neighbor, and I told her to focus on a vision of how that neighbour moving out and some very nice people moving in. It worked perfectly. Maybe that would work for you, as well?

HOLY MOLY!! Yeah you have been busy. Sorry about the rain/flooding. At least if you get a blade you get to putz around in your tractor.. emoticon
And definitely need to do something about that tree. We had one in Washington state that rubbed a hole right through our shingles... emoticon

Happy to hear you have 'solar powered cat chickens'...might keep the mouse population down! emoticon
Sorry about the neighbor's noisy critters...

Oh and I am so with you on NOT changing the time back and forth! emoticon

Have a good one my friend... emoticon

Mercy, Muladzh. You done been a busy lil bee, huh?

That sux about the shop flooding, but maybe you'll be able to get that taken care of soon. The ground outside the shop must be higher than the thresholds causing the water to be able to get in. Some people just don't think. Not seen it, but could it be that the shop has sunk some, too? I know the smoke out behind our house has sunk really badly into the ground, as have a couple of the other sheds on the property. Just a thought.

Glad that your flea problem is easing off. Ours has, as well, except for the ones on the cat! We can't seem to keep him clear of them. doesn't matter what we use emoticon

How funny about your chickens not only being solar powered, but being cat-chickens! I wonder...is that anything like Cat-Dog??? http://www.thecartoonpictures.com/r-catdog-193-cat-dog-1201.htm emoticon sorry..couldn't resist!!

we love our windchimes around here. I have about 5 on the front porch and one in the big maple tree right now. I want to buy one to keep in the camper, but haven't found one I like the sound of well enough....or the looks of. I will ring every windchime I like to see what it sounds like. I don't care how much I like the design, if I don't like the sound, I won't buy it. I'm the same way with bells. I collect bells and I'm really picky. My kids learned what I like in the sound, so if they buy me a bell, they'll ring it and if they don't think I'll like it, they won't get it! Weird, the things we're picky over, isn't it? emoticon

I'm with y'all...I don't like the Daylight Savings time mess. What, exactly do they think they're saving? It's still dark when you get up for work, and it's still dark when you get home from work...so what difference does it make? I think they should just leave things be and let nature be natural!!!

As for the neighbors...YUCK! I'm really glad we have enough land between us and our neighbors that we don't hear much of what is going on at their places. The people on one side of us...their kids ride 4-wheelers in the front of their house all the time, and we may hear them once in a while, but it's rare. Most of what we hear around here are guns during hunting season. Just now had a neighbor who was hunting on property bordering ours in the back. He shot a deer and it ran into the back end of our place. The guy was decent enough to come and ask if it was OK to go and see if he could find it. Of course, I told him yes, but to be doubly sure he closed both of the gates so the cows don't get out. Not many would have asked, so I was more than willing to let him go back there to get his deer..mostly because he did ask! DH was off checking on a newborn calf. A bit ago, someone came up and told us a cow and calved and it looked like the calf was just laying there. Apparently it was in a part of the pasture we can't see from the house, but can be seen from the road. Need to find out from hubby if the new baby is OK. He's still outside.
Gotta love country life!!! (and yes, I truly do!!..even if I don't get the socialization I apparently need!).

Sure hope you're able to get all your homestead's ails fixed and all...but I know you're happy to have things to work on. I just can't see you being idle. Doesn't compute in my brain!!! LOL
