Planning the fall garden

Usually, I would have it all planned and even some things planted by now. But it's been so hot and dry that the things we did start in seed trays withered away in short order.

So I'm going straight for in-ground planting and hoping we can do transplants a bit later. We are also trying something very different. This is all for my home garden, not the farm garden.

Our home garden used to be a big (50' x 100') section of the backyard and it was planted in long rows in the ground. Then after we got the farm, that was too much so I moved it to a small kitchen garden right up next to the house this spring. That ended up not getting quite enough sun. The section that did get full sun did great but it was only a very small area (5' x 5'). So we are rethinking yet again.

I wanted to go back to producing all our veggies at home so I started working on the back garden. But then hubby started talking about doing raised beds in boxes and how decorative it would be. After kicking around some more ideas we finally settled on converting the front yard into a beautiful raised bed vegetable garden!

No one sees our back yard and we can let it be 'wild' but we have to keep the front yard cropped short. But if it's a vegetable garden, we won't be wasting time and energy keeping a lawn just to keep the neighbors happy!

I'll have to take some before pictures (it's sooo depressing right now...bare dirt and patches of dead grass from the drought) and show some of the layouts. We hope to get one bed built and going by the first of October so we can have early turnips and beets. After that, it will probably take us a year to put in everything we are dreaming of!

Wow, a front lawn garden sounds great! I love raised bed (never had one, but the theory sure sounds wonderful). So, lots of luck with starting your first one.

OH TM! I'm so sorry that things are bad right now....but I know they will get better.
LOVE your idea of making raised garden beds. We had them, but out back. Making yours a show place is even better......AND raised beds, your back will thank you! emoticon

Texas...that sounds wonderful!! you may want to check to be sure, if you've not already, that you won't have issues with having a garden in the front yard. It's nothing like a flower garden, and a lot of people take offense to a veggie garden in the front yard. I'd hate for y'all to get started, then run into trouble because of snot nosed neighbors.
I hope it works out the way y'all want,. and yes....photos, please!!!

Re: Planning the fall garden

There are one or two yards in our neighborhood that are chalk full of plants and look like jungles. Not overgrown and unkempt, just densely planted and no grass. I love them! So there are people getting away with it. But we are also wanting to incorporate a pocket prairie. I know we will have to fight for that. But I'm willing to put up that fight.

The pocket prairie will be a small (20' x 20') area that will be surrounded by mulched trails so it will have an obvious border. We will seed with wildflowers. When the plants die back in the fall, we'll mow to keep it looking tidy. I almost hope a certain neighbor will complain so I can take it to the City Council!

I am looking forward to hearing about how it all goes. The idea of neighbors interfering with decisions to grow stuff in the front garden kind of ruffles me up the wrong way. Luckily for us, our intended rural homestead has 'right to farm' title, so we can grow anything anywhere.

muladzh, I've even heard horror stories from people out in the boonies with bad neighbors. It just takes one person not liking what you are doing. And they don't have to get the law involved, they can just make things miserable for you. My advice: make friends with the neighbors right off the bat! The folks that live closest to us love to watch our projects grow. It's a guy that lives 20 houses away that has a problem. And trust me, it's HIS problem, not mine that he doesn't like our yard!

TM....sorry you have that P.I.T.A. (pain in the arse) person who causes you issues.... emoticon

I don't think Muladzh will have to worry about 'other' people, even miles away causing him any distress... emoticon
