We do get decent rainfall, but there are times we go through almost drought...other times, almost flooding. Going to be interesting, so say the least!! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Sat, 08 Oct 2011 01:01:19 +0000 Re: Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239944,from=rss#post239944https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239944,from=rss#post239944Thank you for that wisdom and heads up, Muladzh. Here that gang? Anyone with a farm/home that will have no choice, must find a way to collect the rain water. Mother gives it to us for a reason...lets not waste it. The Earth is a changing.....we must adapt. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Fri, 07 Oct 2011 19:51:48 +0000 Re: Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239938,from=rss#post239938https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239938,from=rss#post239938Unfortunately, there is a major astronomical / astrological event happen right now, that has building events to the Winter Solstice of 2012, then receding to a new state of normalcy by 2020 - a new "Age" is nearly here, and the odd weather of the last couple of years is it coming into being - it will get marginally worse until the end of 2012 then will ease off, but the weather is never going to be the same - well not for about 15,000 years that is. So rain is going to be more in some places - here in Washington it will go up some, but it will unfortunately be much less in places that really need it. My advice for those of you in the drought areas is do not waste any of that rain that does come - build something that will catch it all of your house, barn, sheds and whatever - use polythene to catch it between trees, and store it in barrels for irrigation and washing - buy a British Berkey filter system and you can use for cooking and drinking. It is easy to harvest water, but the idea is strange to the modern world - but if you don't harvest what arrives, you lose out. Think about it - when it rains in the deserts, it FLOODS - if you had caught that water in barrels, or tanks, you could survive with just one rainfall a year. A 50ft by 30ft house will catch over 100 gallons an hour, in a reasonable rain storm. In the desert in Nevada, we filled 15 5gallon buckets in one hour's rainfall. nondisclosed_email@example.com (muladzh)Fri, 07 Oct 2011 02:30:35 +0000 Re: Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239935,from=rss#post239935https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239935,from=rss#post239935We are in New Mexico and they are down too....and like I said Arizona was off by many, many inches too and look at how many horrible dust storms they have had this year. Way more than normal.... I'm hoping that prediction does not come true either.....or it may be another great Depression type of situation....major "Dust bowl"...nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Thu, 06 Oct 2011 19:20:08 +0000 Re: Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239930,from=rss#post239930https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239930,from=rss#post239930Some part of me just can't imagine it could last for 9 years. Sure, we may have less than average rainfall, but I don't think it can really go THIS BAD that whole time. We have a 40% chance this weekend...nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Thu, 06 Oct 2011 14:32:05 +0000 Re: Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239924,from=rss#post239924https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239924,from=rss#post239924TM: Hope Texas won't be headed that way. That would be very, very hard. Fall storms have started here, with heavy rains and strong winds. We'd miss a few hens for a while, and pretty soon, they'd come waddling back from being out in the brush behind our house, sitting/hatching, with a brood of ducklings in tow. They're just too cute. At the same time, we'd grab what eggs were layed there in the duck yard for eating. I could only eat about one for breakfast rather than the usual 2 chicken eggs. Makes awesome cakes, cornbread, etc, too!! I SO hope y'all get some rain. Not just for you and the farm, but for my daughter in Killeen and my sister in San Angelo. It's just horribly dry down there, and some of the photos I've seen are really disturbing. I hope for the entire state, y'all get a good long, soaking rain! Nothing to cause flooding situations or anything bad...just a good, steady rain!! *crosses fingers!* nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Wed, 05 Oct 2011 16:34:20 +0000 Re: Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239902,from=rss#post239902https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239902,from=rss#post239902Ducks eggs are now my preferred egg. They are rich and creamy and make everything taste wonderful! If we can even get just a little rain, we will have pasture for all our animals. Right now, it's just not growing back after grazing so we don't want the animals to ruin it so we are keeping them in the woods as much as possible. RAIN!!!! (there is some in the forecast for this weekend...) nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Wed, 05 Oct 2011 13:07:05 +0000 Re: Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239889,from=rss#post239889https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239889,from=rss#post239889Mercy, Texas! Some good, some not so good! I hope you can get sold what you need to, for their sake as well as your own! Sounds like the new ladies there are going to do very well. Too bad we live so far apart, I'd buy some of your drakes. We'd probably end up with some wild hens here, with all the ponds and such. Get them tamed enough, keep them around for production and eggs! LOVE to cook with duck eggs!!! We've still not gotten our chickens! guess that will happen next Spring. (sigh) Also hope that whoever purchases the land across the way keep things on a natural level as much as possible, and they are good neighbors. Good luck with all the issues you have going on! Like Queeny, I will keep you in my daily thoughts! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Wed, 05 Oct 2011 04:21:03 +0000 Re: Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239880,from=rss#post239880https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239880,from=rss#post239880TM I shall be keeping you in my nightly meditations that you either can rid yourself of the extra critters or find food for those you have no choice but to keep.. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Tue, 04 Oct 2011 20:34:36 +0000 Re: Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239875,from=rss#post239875https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239875,from=rss#post239875TM, that sounds rough. Hope you can sell all the animals that have to go. I totally understand the feed problem - that's a most important reason for downsizing. Best of luck! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Tue, 04 Oct 2011 07:36:10 +0000 Re: Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239872,from=rss#post239872https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239872,from=rss#post239872I'm not sure if its the economy. Our area hasn't been hit as bad as others. I am sure the drought is affecting things. I actually had a sale - complete with deposit - fall through because the woman's hay source stopped producing and she was terrified she couldn't find food for the winter. We all are - we've built extra storage and are packing it full with the last of the local hay. We may be buying from all over the country at exorbitant prices if we don't sell all the animals we need to!nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Tue, 04 Oct 2011 01:58:07 +0000 Re: Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239868,from=rss#post239868https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239868,from=rss#post239868Wow...sounds like you got your hands full with the garden and the critters. Do you think this economy is hampering how fast your critters are selling or not selling? Good luck on getting new and GOOD neighbors...nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Mon, 03 Oct 2011 20:58:14 +0000 Goings on at the farmhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239857,from=rss#post239857https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p239857,from=rss#post239857We finally got a bunch of fall crops put in - kale, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, parsnips, beets, turnips and radishes. The summer stuff is slowing down but we are still getting okra, eggplant and peppers. I hope the tomatoes will perk up soon! Outside the garden, we are having some livestock issues. We've decided to reduce the sheep flock and just cut back to the 2 'pets'. I've already sold 4 and have 4 more to go. Not sure if we can sell the one-eyed wether so we may have 3 pets...hopefully he can be tamed somewhat. The sexed ducks we got from the feed store turned out to be straight run so we have nearly a dozen drakes that we need to find homes for. Good luck there...I'm fine with selling them for food but Mom's not there yet. The goats are doing great. We've sold half the babies (last year we had them all sold by this age) and hope we can sell the rest except maybe one we all really like. We also have new 'WWOOFers'. It's a lesbian couple from New Jersey who want to stay for a year! They are both chefs and both very interested in learning everything - and they are quick to pick stuff up. We are very excited about them staying here. The land across the street is for sale and we wonder what might be put up there. There's no "house" to speak of, just an old shack and some trailers (which I guess they will take with them?). It does have water, septic and electric so it wouldn't be hard to turn into a living space. I think the owners prior to the current ones did live there but the current ones just use it as a country landing. Hopefully we'll have nice neighbors! Lots more but that's the bulk of the news!nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Mon, 03 Oct 2011 19:48:18 +0000
