Comfort food?

I was thinking about this the other day. It's cold, I'm tending toward being in a funk lately (pregnant and an aching back don't help) and I was wanting some comfort food but having a hart time coming up with anything! The only thing that really stuck out in my mind was a cheese sandwich, pecans and a Dublin Dr. Pepper (the kind still made in Dublin TX with real sugar instead of HFCS).

Uh. Weird comfort food. But it reminds me of when my dad made dinner for us! emoticon

What's your idea of comfort food? When do you need your comfort food?

Oh, man. I have comfort food, but it's in the junk food category. emoticon

- dark chocolate
- %28snack%29]Flips (corn / peanut thingies)

I just found some organic spelt cookies filled with dark chocolate that are very yummy, yet so filling I can only eat two or three of them. They might become my "healthy" comfort food choice.

Oh, and I need it when I feel down and overwhelmed. It doesn't really help, but it seems to make things a little easier for a while.

Re: Comfort food?

One of my comfort foods is tomato soup made with milk instead of water, add some butter and salt and pepper, then crush Ritz crackers up in it. I want that mostly when I've got a cold or the flu. Mom used to make that for me when I was little, and home sick from school.

When I'm feeling depressed, I lean more toward the sugary stuff, and just about anything will do. Payday candy bars, a bowl of ice cream or a pre-made ice cream cone with chocolate coating and peanuts (Nutty Buddy or [sign in to see URL] you're used to calling them), just about anything chocolate.

Another is hot tea sweetened with honey. I love that in the winter, but more-so when I'm not feeling real [sign in to see URL] whatever reason.

Firle, what is a spelt cookie?

]Spelt is an older variety of wheat, basically, and the cookies are made of that (and chocolate).

Spelt is often considered healthier than wheat, because it contains less gluten. It has become quite the fad here in Germany, where it is mostly grown organic.

Spelt is certainly a fad food here in Austin (we are big on fad foods being the hometown of Whole Foods and having a big progressive college population!). I actually had a spelt tortilla for my breakfast taco this morning!

Saijen, I forgot about tomato soup! That's certainly hubby's comfort food when he's sick. I used to love Campbell's canned tomato soup and cheddar cheese soup mixed together. I need to come up with a homemade version!

[sign in to see URL] you for the explanation of what spelt is!

Texas, I don't think I'd like the cheese soup mixed into the tomato, but I love grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup.

Queeny, I've not had good homemade potato soup in AGES! I love potato soup, but mine never turns out real good for some reason.
You got a good recipe you're willing to share???

I just dice up potatoes and a wee bit of onion, cover in water boil till potatoes are just barely done. Dump most all the water, saving some to mix with corn starch for a 'rue' like [sign in to see URL] heat that corn starch mixture adding milk a wee bit at a time, letting it get thick each time before adding more milk, constantly stirring, adding a bit of milk each [sign in to see URL] making thin gravy. Then when you have it just right add the potato/onions back in. Add Salt ans pepper to taste.
Mom likes to add bits of leftover ham to hers.
Dad dumps a drained can of clams in [sign in to see URL] faux clam chowder.
My sister adds a can of corn to hers...
