Greetings and Merry Meet!
Interesting place here.. thought I would join y'all. A little about me (us). I have been following an eclectic celtic wiccan path for about 10 years. I remarried a little over 4 years ago. My new wife expressed a supressed interest in the 'old ways" a couple years back. I shared my beliefs with her and she embraced them. This past Yule marked her first complete cycle around the wheel. We celebrate the sabbats and live the path. In our prepping for when the SHTF, we have turned to a nearly chemical-free life-style. Since then I have been able to stop taking my type II diabeties, high-blood pressure, and GERD meds - as well as dropping about 50 pounds. The only things we eat that are suspect are meat, eggs, and dairy products. But that should soon be history as well.
We are currently working on getting the needed financing to embark on our deeply held dream of having a mini-homestead. We have found the property we want and can afford. We board our two horses locally, and so they will be of course joining the two of us humans. We are planning to add a trio of laying hens and small flock of chickens for meat, and 2 Kinder does and one Kinder buck to provide us with dairy and meat.
So any input or advice will be appreciated. I will keep y'all appraised as to our progress.
BB,
-Dutch

Re: Greetings and Merry Meet!
Hello and welcome!
First, HUGE congratulations on getting off the meds. Our medical system is not set up to help people manage those diseases - we unfortunately focus on prescribing things to mask the symptoms. So here's a big pat on the back!
And also congratulations on the new homestead! It's such an adventure. My family has a farm about an hour from my house that I have had varying degrees of involvement in (I ran the entire garden and CSA for two [sign in to see URL] with my full time job!). We have our "homestead in the city" as well - right now it's just a garden PLAN and two bee hives. We once had chickens here and hope to add poultry back again this year as we are focusing more on this property rather than the farm.
I've not much experience with kinder goats, but we do have Alpine dairy goats. I'm happy to share any knowledge with you on that front!
So welcome again and I look forward to exchanging homesteading and pagan ideas with you!

Hello Dutchaz, and welcome to the board!
Glad you found us. TM is quite experienced in homesteading by now, and another member, Playfultree, has been raising goats for a long time.
All the best for your plans, and congrats on getting rid of all the meds. Eating good food is really important.

Re: Greetings and Merry Meet!
Hello and welcome, Duchaz!!! Glad you found us. It sounds like you'll fit in nicely here, and I hope that as you learn from us, we are also learning from you.
I really look forward to your progress on your 'mini homestead'.
While we are currently only gardening, we do plan on eventually getting some laying hens. We were supposed to have gotten them last Spring, but some issues came up and the chicken lot didn't get finished.
This past Saturday, I made homemade butter, using an antique ceramic butter churn, and fresh cream I purchased from a somewhat local dairy. I was rather proud of my efforts. TexasMadness has also recently made [sign in to see URL] both have photos and the process posted in 'Food and Health'
I look forward to your posts, your progress and getting to know you!
