I can see why you opted for the kayak....having the funds and gift card kind of helped with that decision, I'm sure. And, it's sure good to have you back!!! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Sat, 24 Mar 2012 19:44:32 +0000 Re: Fun new kitchen gadget...Vitamix!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242524,from=rss#post242524https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242524,from=rss#post242524I freely admit to skimming this thread in an attempt to catch up here.... But it is a very weird coincidence. Basically my dear wifes and mine conversation this week came down to "Buy a Kayak for me now, or buy a a Vitamix" I was strongly leaning towards a Vitamix but after stopping by Dunhams sports.... and seeing they only had one of the kayak on sale that I wanted left.. and having a gift card for there... and having birthday money burning a hole in my pocket.. and not needing much else beyond those...... I finally own a kayak again after 5 years without!! But I am SOOOOOOO buying a Vitamix as soon as we get our Federal tax return back!!! Anyhow.... Congrats on yours.... and I can't wait to get ours! Very happy for you! nondisclosed_email@example.com (PerpetuallyCurious)Sat, 24 Mar 2012 07:52:35 +0000 Re: Fun new kitchen gadget...Vitamix!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242499,from=rss#post242499https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242499,from=rss#post242499This morning was the first time since getting the Vitamix that I didn't make a smoothie. Breakfast felt kind of "lacking" without! But I just wasn't feeling creative and we didn't have many staples on hand. Need to go to the store!nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Fri, 23 Mar 2012 17:26:54 +0000 Re: Fun new kitchen gadget...Vitamix!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242329,from=rss#post242329https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242329,from=rss#post242329Those actually sound really good....except the one with cilantro. I'm not a huge fan of cilantro. I like just an itty bitty bit in some things, and I do mean an itty bitty bit! It's too strong of an herb for my taste. Do you find you have more energy using the spinach in the smoothies? Maybe post some of the actual recipes that you're finding as your favorites....start a new 'Smoothie Recipes' thread. I think those would make an excellent breakfast. I'm not really a big breaktast eater during the week.... You mentioned needing other bases besides apple juice...what about cranberry or cran-apple, cran-peach, cran-grape type juice blends? Cran-peach with blueberries and strawberries???? Magpie, do you have some favorite smoothie recipes you do, too? Or some you did?? If so, feel free to share those, too, if you'd like. This goes for anyone else that enjoys making/drinking smoothies. I just need to get my smoothie recipe book out, and my blender and just make some attempts (and hope if it calls for a lot of ice that my blender can handle crushing the ice..lol)nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Tue, 13 Mar 2012 20:09:38 +0000 Re: Fun new kitchen gadget...Vitamix!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242326,from=rss#post242326https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242326,from=rss#post242326Magpie, that stinks! I was afraid you were going to say it just crapped out on you, but a house fire is even worse! Saijen, it's the best ice crusher I've ever known. It can turn ice cubes in a smooth and creamy drink like they serve at coffee shops. My mom has a really good "frappuccino" type recipe - I need to get it from her! We've made smoothies every morning with the Vitamix and I'm really loving it. Some have been a little strange, but that's the recipe fault, not the Vitamix! Apple juice, kale, blueberries: pretty good, a bit much kale though I think! Apple juice, strawberries, spinach: quite tasty, but wish it had been creamy (still waiting for bananas to ripen!) Apple juice, spinach, cilantro, mango: WHOA cilantro! I had read it was a good ingredient and only put a touch in there. It tasted like drinking a sweet salsa. Not going to try that again! Apple juice, frozen blueberries, frozen strawberries: after the failure of the cilantro smoothie, hubby demanded a non-green one. This was super delicious! Apple juice, mango, kiwi, spinach: by far my favorite - and Willa's too! As soon as Willa gets in the kitchen in the morning she starts asking for her smoothie now. She helps put the ingredients in the container and then hides behind the wall into the living room while I run the thing...it's pretty loud! I'm making some yogurt so we can do some with that. Also need to get some other bases besides apple juice!nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Tue, 13 Mar 2012 17:00:26 +0000 Re: Fun new kitchen gadget...Vitamix!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242315,from=rss#post242315https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242315,from=rss#post242315Oh dear, Magpie! So sorry to hear you had to deal with a house fire! (former volunteer fire fighter here!) One of these days, maybe you can replace it! and..maybe one of these days, I can talk my DH into something along that line, since we do make our own tomato juice and such. Texas, does it crush ice very well? Or have you tried that yet? Sometimes I like a nice slushy type drink, but the blender I have doesn't do ice fine enoughnondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Mon, 12 Mar 2012 22:09:56 +0000 Re: Fun new kitchen gadget...Vitamix!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242311,from=rss#post242311https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242311,from=rss#post242311I miss my Vitamix! It lived on the kitchen counter and was used at least a couple of times a week. What's left of it is now a planter (they don't seem to survive house fires for some reason...)nondisclosed_email@example.com (MagpieWench)Mon, 12 Mar 2012 21:56:42 +0000 Re: Fun new kitchen gadget...Vitamix!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242290,from=rss#post242290https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242290,from=rss#post242290We don't use a blender on a regular enough basis to warrant that kind of money. It pretty much only gets used when I'm canning stuff like the tomato juice and spaghetti sauce. I have a little electric chopper I got from Dad's when he passed that I also use. I love that little thing!! Not very big, and was probably an el cheapo, but it works like a dream for what we use it for. We need to do more smoothies and such...I have a recipe book for smoothies that a diabetic, or someone on a weight-loss diet can do, but I never think to get it out and try some of the stuff. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Sat, 10 Mar 2012 21:13:47 +0000 Re: Fun new kitchen gadget...Vitamix!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242285,from=rss#post242285https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242285,from=rss#post242285I've been reading about green smoothies for a while now and wanted to try them. I don't have a blender at all, and my kitchen is very small as it is ... so I haven't done anything in this direction at all. Still, I think you made a really good choice. You have a great machine now, and it'll make using it all the time much easier.   nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Sat, 10 Mar 2012 16:20:52 +0000 Re: Fun new kitchen gadget...Vitamix!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242277,from=rss#post242277https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242277,from=rss#post242277It took me 3 years to even convince myself to spend that much money on a blender too. I had read several recommendations in various issues of Cooks Illustrated (a magazine I really trust) and still wasn't convinced. After using my mom's new one, I KNEW it was the perfect thing for my kitchen...but STILL couldn't bring myself to buy it! I just had to put a little money in the "Vitamix fund" every month and eventually I had enough. Like I said though, STILL choked on the price tag, but the hesitation ended up saving me $70! By the by, having just re-read the article in Cooks Illustrated on blenders, their recommended one is nearly $200 unless you plan on using it a lot, then get the Vitamix. So even the "cheap" one is still dang pricey! It's a Kitchenaid...the website is super slow to load but here it is.nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Fri, 09 Mar 2012 22:53:03 +0000 Re: Fun new kitchen gadget...Vitamix!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242271,from=rss#post242271https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242271,from=rss#post242271I would love to have a really good blender. We make our own tomato juice, spaghetti sauce and such, and the blender I have..while good, just doesn't blend as well as I'd really, truly like. But, I know my DH....and there is no way in hades he'd spend, or let me spend that much for a blender..no matter how long it lasts or how good it is. LOVE the green 'stache' Willa is sporting, there!!! LOL. She's such a cutie patootie! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Fri, 09 Mar 2012 20:52:25 +0000 Fun new kitchen gadget...Vitamix!https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242265,from=rss#post242265https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242265,from=rss#post242265I've been wanting a Vitamix for a couple of years now. I borrowed the one my sister-in-law inherited from her grandparents for about a year and fell in love. That thing was 30 or 40 years old and was the best blender I've ever used. It had a cool stainless steel container too! But she eventually wanted it back and I had borrowed it to replace a broken blender so I had no blending tool at all except the stick blender. I couldn't stomach buying one of those crappy $20 at Target so I saved and saved for a Vitamix. In the meantime, my mom bought a new one...and it's so much better than the old one! They really are incredible machines and make the price tag not seem quite so ridiculous. So I had the money saved. I went online 2 nights ago, getting ready to order. Ugh, $450! They just sound so dang expensive! But if you use them several times a week and they last forever, you are going to get your moneys worth. When I was using regular blenders, I probably bought a new $20 one every year because they break down so easily. But tt was just hard to stomach the price tag, so I didn't order it. Yesterday, my mom drug me to Costco (I hate that place - the buzzing lights give me an instant headache). And there was the Vitamix...for $380! I couldn't believe the $70 price difference and pounced on it immediately. Whew, easy way to save 70 bucks! Here's the one I got: And this morning we made kale smoothies! It's really the only machine (well, it and the Blendtech) that can turn leafy greens into a smooth liquid - at least the only one I've found. Willa chugged down kale this morning! Green smoothie mustache!nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Fri, 09 Mar 2012 17:06:56 +0000
