Seeds and planting

I've got my seeds for my herb garden...all except for the stevia.

The earliest good day to plant the seeds is this coming Friday....so, guess that's what I'll be doing.

Today, DH and I repaired all the windchimes that were broken, and I repaired a wind/sun catcher.
Spent some time checking the plants in the yard. Everything is starting to get leaves, and one of my Helliborus (Christmas Rose) has blooms on it already! Pretty burgandy blooms!! They bloom in cold weather...something we've not really had any of!!!

Discovered that the fig sprigs we cut off my Dad's fig tree, before the tornado messed it up and the bulldozers dozed it down, are also getting some leaf sprouts...3 of the 5 cuttings are still green...and they've never been taken out of the pots! LOL... I need to see about getting them planted. Just have to figure out where I want to them!!

Looks like spring has actually sprung....early!!!

I also need to get some stuff transplanted....my aloe, for one! The thing is way too large for the pot it's in, and I have a jillion babies coming up in the pot! Lotta good spring stuff! One of my favorite times of year! emoticon

Re: Seeds and planting

That's awesome! I love this time of year, too. I have herb seedlings coming up on my enclosed greenhouse shelf. Some of my stevia seedlings are even starting to come up. emoticon

I am taking a risk for Minnesota and planting beets, spinach and lettuce tomorrow. It's been so unseasonably warm, I figure it's worth a try. If it doesn't work out, then I'm out a few seeds.

Going to be starting my pepper seedlings this week, and tomatoes in another week or so.

Saijen, I'm glad that your fig cuttings worked out. I was going to take some grape ones last fall but I totally forgot. Where are you that you are able to get figs to grow? I have heard of people growing them in the north if they grow them on the southern side of a house.. DH and I have thought about it.

Rebecca, I'm glad that things are sprouting for you! I just love watching plants as they grow and produce.

I take it, from your comment, that you don't generally attempt spinach, beets and such? Or, is it just that you don't attempt them this early in the season? I'm still scared to do much of anything outdoors, for fear we'll get one hard cold snap and it will undo everything. For us, it wouldn't just be a few seeds (not the way my DH plants! emoticon )

I am in Upper Northeast Tennessee. Almost to the TN/VA state line. The fig tree I got the cuttings from was in NE Alabama where my Dad lived. It was a HUGE tree and had the sweetest figs on it. Bigger than my thumb. When Dad died, the tree was full...my sister and I would go out (I was staying at my Dad's house to take care of paperwork and such) and pick all we could find, then put some away for us to snack on, and gave the rest to family who live in the area.
Where I've had the cuttings is in a fairly protected area. The way my house is built, I have a basement, but you have to go outside and down a small hill to get to the door. There is a cinder block retaining wall that makes like an enclosed area, approximately 6'x wide by 9'-10'long. The door is on one end (this is on the NW side of the house) and the rest of the area is just there...so, we put the pots containing the cuttings in the corner where they could get rain, but be out of the wind and such...as our winds come out of the N/NW for the most part. We really didn't think they'd live since we had no clue if we'd cut them off the right way. We looked online and did what we were instructed, but you just never really know...LOL. Anyway, as we were checking plants the other day, I mentioned the fig cuttings, so we looked, and sure enough, some are still green, and have tiny leaf buds. I just hope I can get them to grow like Dad did. That man could grow anything!!! emoticon

All the dogwoods are in full blossom around here, as well as the daffodils, crocus and on our drive on Saturday I noticed the Elderberries and the Shasta snow-wreath, are beginning to bloom! Way up in Burney, the Manzanita and it's tiny pink heart blossoms were everywhere...even though there was snow on the sides of the road.... emoticon
Manzanita bush, I got, thought it was cool looking:

Queeny, very pretty bush!!

Today, I got 36 pots in a tray 'greenhouse' planted with 3 each of the following:

Basil, Catnip, Chamomile, Cilantro, Dill, Echinacea, Oregano, Parsley, Rosemary, Sage, Tarragon and Thyme.

Tomorrow, DH and I have to go get some stuff to kill fleas, then I think we're going to Lowe's and I'm going to see if I can find a Stevia plant.

It felt really good to get outside and play in the dirt, even if it wasn't some I dug up.
I still have some transplanting that I need to do..and may work on that tomorrow when we get back, weather permitting.

As you know, we are always seeding things year round...BUT I haven't officially started on my spring planting yet! emoticon I'm getting a bit antsy about it but I need some things done to the garden first before I feel like I can start seeds. I'd hate to start a bunch and then not have a place to put them. Plus my mom loves growing things from seed and she is doing a whole bunch for me this year.

Re: Seeds and planting

Texas, I know what you mean about needing stuff done to the garden! I am seriously in need of some planters for the herbs. I will NOT put them back in the garden because I can't trust my DH or the landlord not to disc over them, thinking they're weeds, and I can't 'rope off' an area for them because they need to be able to get the tractor in there. So, I've decided I'm going to get a couple of good sized pots and just do a container herb garden. Keeps my herbs safe, and I can put them up on the back porch/deck which is right there at the back/kitchen door.

DH is ripping the garden today, getting it ready for a good discing, then a more precise tilling. Later today, we're going to get some onion sets, and, if possible, see if the Co-Op has any Stevia. If not, we may head to Lowe's later on.

Well in truth, this was the first time I've planted beets or spinach. This is actually the first spring I have lived (full time) in a home with a back yard in my adult life, so we are finally getting our gardening more seriously under way! But never in a million years would I have considered planting these so early in MN, at least not until this freaky early spring! So I did plant beets on Tuesday, just 163 seeds because we don't eat a ton of beets. I am hoping to just have enough to pickle a few pints. I planted spinach in a big tub on the porch, and lots of lettuce and radishes have been started, too. My garlic is looking nice, but I'm sad I didn't start more last year. (Only 24 plants up, still working with limited space.)

Queeny, that manzanita is very cool looking.

I recently discovered that the yellow flowering bush at the front of my walkway is called forsythia. I have two of them, actually. They can get quite tall, and they are in a small place, so I will have to stay on top of things. The lady who owned the house before us seemed to have a think for invasive plants.. I'm having trouble clearing out the back corner in our yards, hostas, trumpet vines, hops, lilies, hibiscus. Trying to make it be less of a jungle this year. Lots of beautiful flowers came with our house, but things are getting a bit too chaotic for my tastes.

It's so wonderful to read about you all getting your Spring planting started....a new beginning is always a good thing.

Glad you liked my 'bush'...I thought it was interesting.

Oh Love those.....had one HUGE one in our yard as kids. But they can get out of hand, so keep your trimmers near... emoticon

Re: Seeds and planting

Rebecca, I can totally understand about having a place to actually have a garden. I grew up with gardens...both veggie and flower. My Dad should have been a Master Gardener, and, really, he was...just not with all the scholarly diplomas and such. He finally stopped having a veggie garden when it became a bit much for him to deal with on his own. When my parents divorced, Mom never did the 'garden thing' and I lived with her in order to get into a different school district. Then, when I got married, my then husband was too busy with work to do a garden, even though we had a place where we could do one. Eventually, we moved from there, into an apartment..so, no garden...and from that point, until we bought land and had a house built, we didn't garden. Then...when we attempted to garden where we bought, the high voltage power lines that went thru the middle of our back yard fried everything we put into the ground. (LONG story on that kind of thing..not for this forum) So, I didn't get to do any gardening until I moved into the home I live in now. The bulk of my gardening experience came from when I was a kid....which pretty much means I didn't know squat! emoticon Now, my current DH thinks that just cause you have the room, you should use as much of it as possible for a garden!!! emoticon He about kills me...LOL. I do love the fresh stuff, though, so can't complain too awfully much.

I am still searching for either Stevia seeds or a plant....but I'll find it when the time is right.

The seedlings DH got started are doing wonderfully. Tomatoes and cabbage.. emoticon

Forsythias are beautiful, but yes, they can get away from you. A neighbor has several, and every Fall, he cuts them WAY back, and shapes them....they always look so nice in the Spring.
The Hibiscus...just keep it cut back in the fall, and it won't take over, either. Mine, I'm afraid, may have died emoticon Can't tell yet.

Hostas, you can seperate them, in the fall, and either toss what you don't want, or transplant to other areas of your yard, or to a pot, and sell them on Craig's List, Ebay, or some other type thing like that...if you're so inclined....or, put them on FreeCycle and give them away. Hostas are exceptionally hardy plants!! I have a total of 4, and 3 of those came from the main plant!

Lilies, generally aren't a spreader, so they may be reseeding themselves. If that's the case, you may want to watch when a bloom dies, and be sure to clip the bloom and throw it away so that you don't get a proliferation of lilies where you don't want them.

Hops, I have no clue about...sorry. Same with trumpet vines, but most vines, if they grow with 'elbows', you can break it off at the elbow, and transplant and do the same with those as you would the Hostas, if they root and grow well in pots.

Hope this helps some with getting the plants in a more managable frame of 'being'. You may have to wait till Fall to tend to a lot of it, but pruning can sure make a difference.....Good luck!! emoticon
