I think they are also called African Daisy or something, since they look so much like a daisy. I really should take a picture of it. Today was a rainy and dark day, though, not good for taking pictures.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Mon, 07 May 2012 19:53:54 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243177,from=rss#post243177https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243177,from=rss#post243177Cool on the new flower for your balcony!! Looks almost like a daisy! Love the color!!!!!!! I hope it stays with you, too! Is it an annual? Didn't read that far on the link. So far, no more planting here...not sure if DH got the corn planted yesterday or not. Not looked at the garden. Today, looks like rain, so what is in the garden may get some watering by Mother Nature! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Mon, 07 May 2012 19:31:32 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243160,from=rss#post243160https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243160,from=rss#post243160Ah, of course, here we get frost which will kill it off. I can see your point, though! I did some potting myself: I got a nice purple flowering plant (Osteospermium) for my balcony and took it out of the plastic pot it came in and planted it in a much larger, ceramic pot. I love how the flowers start almost white and then turn purple. I hope it'll stay with me all summer.    nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Mon, 07 May 2012 12:27:28 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243150,from=rss#post243150https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243150,from=rss#post243150Firle...all Wandering Jew needs is soil....or a jar of water, even. Yesterday.... DH thought I needed to transplant my African Violet, so, as I was trying to pull the entire thing from the pot, one chunk came out....so, planted it in a small pot, and we ended up creating 3 new pots of African Violets. I also have several pots with combinations of Spider plants and Wandering Jew. One of my baby Spiders fell off the stem, so it got potted. Then, in the process of pulling dead, dry leaves off my mariad of Wandering Jews, some healthy ends came off of dead vine stems.....ended up with 20 of those, so they all got potted...divided between 2 pots. So, now, I have a host of newly potted things to tend to. Also, looks like I'm going to have to get another Tarragon plant. The one I had is deader than a doornail. No clue why. We're slowly getting the front area..porch, flower beds, etc, back to their normal Spring/Summer splendor. Just takes time. Rebecca, hope your DH gets the other beds built for you, without too much fuss...lol. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Tue, 01 May 2012 23:24:53 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243018,from=rss#post243018https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243018,from=rss#post243018Indeed, you sound very busy! So far this week I planted some spinach, radishes and a little swiss chard. And some sunflowers today. Not a lot, about 20 if they all come up. Tomorrow I need to repot my pepper seedlings, they are getting too big for their britches. In about 2-3 weeks I will put them out. The tomatoes are looking good and I hope I have good luck with them this year. Tomorrow I am going to start some zucchini and cuke seedlings just to make sure they germinate. I am always impatient and feel like I am never putting enough in the garden, but we've got limited space! Poor husband has to make two more big raised beds for me, and I don't think he's all that happy about it. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Rebecca Wraenna)Tue, 01 May 2012 19:51:38 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242996,from=rss#post242996https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242996,from=rss#post242996Sounds like a great amount of progress! I love getting all new things in. At the farm, with year round gardening, there isn't the big flush at the beginning of spring. I kinda miss that. But we are getting that this year at our house since it's the first garden there in a awhile. It's fun to have all new baby plants out there!nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Mon, 30 Apr 2012 16:28:29 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242987,from=rss#post242987https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242987,from=rss#post242987Finally....got the herbs transplanted today. All but one, and it's in a larger pot than the ones I bought when I thought I'd be transplanting my seedlings. I mixed 10 pots of Miracle Grow potting soil, 4 pots of composted cow manure and about 1 pot of Perlite. Mixed it all up well (the pots were probably a gallon or so) and let it sit for a while. The pots that most of the herbs were in were those Bonnie Bell biodegradable 'pots', but I took those off, completely, and tossed them into the hayfield. After getting them in the pots, I watered them real good, then put them on a small table on the back porch. They'll get plenty of morning sunshine, afternoon shade (when the sun is the hottest), and has some protection from the wind. Plus, it's just outside the kitchen/utility room door. Easy to get to if I need/want some fresh herbs for cooking and/or canning. I have dill, basil, oregano, parsley, sage, thyme, tarragon and rosemary. I still need to get a couple of others, but those are the main ones I wanted anyway. I have some Stevia waiting for me near Memphis. I'll get it on my way back home from Texas in June. I'll see the lady who has it on my way down, but I don't want to have to keep the plant in the truck for 2 weeks...so, she'll hang on to it for me till I head home. We also got some things into the garden today, finally. Green and yellow bell peppers, hot and sweet banana peppers, 2 types of tomatoes and 9 cabbage plants. Our onions are coming up nicely, now, too. Still have corn, okra, beans, cukes, squash (summer and zucchini) beets, we're gonna try sweet potatoes. That will probably be next weekend, or the one after. Depends on weather and time. Radishes and lettuce are coming up good, so, the garden is finally coming along. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Sat, 28 Apr 2012 23:58:09 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242978,from=rss#post242978https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242978,from=rss#post242978The Oregano I got Greek. Very flavorful! The sauce we made has home grown bell pepper, tomatoes and onions in it. We just pureed the tomatoes, chopped the peppers and onion together, then I added storebought garlic and spices to it, then canned it. After it sits, the natural water in the tomatoes tends to make it watery, so that's why I add some tomato paste (store bought) to it. just one of the small cans....and some more spices. It will be nice to add the fresh spices, instead of the store bought stuff to my sauce this year! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Fri, 27 Apr 2012 20:50:47 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242971,from=rss#post242971https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242971,from=rss#post242971Oh, now I'm hungry for pasta! I love a good red sauce! What kind of oregano did you buy? Another yummy fresh herb pasta dish is to just heat up some olive oil, add fresh minced garlic and snipped up fresh herbs, then dump the pasta on top without even cooking the herbs or garlic. The hot pasta cooks it just enough to warm it up. Soooo tasty with lots of basil, and parmesan cheese! We'll add a fresh chopped tomato sometimes if we have one, too. Cannot wait for summer cooking! I counted today, and I have 40 tomato seedlings started! I get a bit carried away sometimes. I had six different varieties, seven if you count two different types of brandywine. Told DH that he's going to need to dig an extra bed for me. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Rebecca Wraenna)Fri, 27 Apr 2012 20:35:02 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242947,from=rss#post242947https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242947,from=rss#post242947I think tomorrow, if possible, I'm going to transplant the herb plants I bought, and get them into actual pots. They are all in those biodegradable pots that are almost like peat pots, but I may just take the plant out, altogether. Night before last, I made spaghetti, using a jar of the homemade sauce we did last year, but it's really runny after sitting, so I usually add a small can of tomato paste to it, which means I have to add more spices. I added some store bought stuff, then pulled some of my fresh oregano and put in it...and OH MY GOSH! That was the best sauce I've ever eaten. The flavor just burst in your mouth. So, when I make my sauce this year, I will be adding fresh herbs.....all the way! DH was amazed at the difference adding the fresh stuff made. I put probably 10 small oregano leaves in the sauce, and let it simmer for a bit while the water for the noodles boiled then the noodles got cooked. YUM! I was rather proud of that LOL.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Fri, 27 Apr 2012 07:19:35 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242937,from=rss#post242937https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242937,from=rss#post242937Hmmmmm, I never added fertilizer to mine on purpose, but Miracle grow... it has nutrients in it....I suppose that is a fertilizer type.. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Thu, 26 Apr 2012 20:45:40 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242930,from=rss#post242930https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242930,from=rss#post242930I pretty much do what you do, Queeny. My husband worked someplace that had a greenhouse attached, and he dumpster dived for me to get tons of those little cell pots for starting things. And bigger pots for transplanting. We fill them with miracle grow potting soil, and start our seeds in it. I recently attended a talk on starting herb seedlings, the presenter runs an herb nursery and does farmer's market all summer for herb plants. She said NOT to start them in anything with fertilizer, said it can stop them from starting! Well, mine have always come up anyway, but I guess it's something to think about. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Rebecca Wraenna)Thu, 26 Apr 2012 15:42:06 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242913,from=rss#post242913https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242913,from=rss#post242913Sounds like a plan....good luck lady! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Wed, 25 Apr 2012 17:33:08 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242895,from=rss#post242895https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242895,from=rss#post242895Queeny, that's kind of what I'm going to do with these trays, since we already have them. Same concept as what you're talking about, but I'm going to dump that...whatever you wanna call that dirt....out and put in the mix of Miracle Grow, perlite and composted cow manure, then retry some seeds and see if they do any better. These trays have the clear plastic covers, to act as a greenhouse. Maybe we can get more, stronger and bigger seedlings that way. I think they were purchased last year, but now that I think about it....none came up last year, either! So, wondering if the seeds were just a bad lot, or what. Wouldn't think that many varities would all be bad, though. When I planted them, I put about 3 seeds per pot, so to be on the safe side, and they just did not come up at all. I still think some of it was that weird dirt/peat stuff they use in those trays. So, I'll try again with seeds and the mixture of potting soil, composted manure and perlite (just a dab) and see if they do any better.   I hope your seeds all do really well! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Fri, 20 Apr 2012 21:30:56 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242829,from=rss#post242829https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242829,from=rss#post242829Old seeds - especially those not stored under ideal conditions - can be especially frustrating! We are trying to get rid of old seeds from the farm right now so most of them are going in my garden. Fortunately, they were stored pretty well but even so, four year old seed is not the best to start with! I usually don't plant very thick - I just put things in at the proper spacing. But this year, I'm planting close and planning on thinning if I get that much germination. So far too many seedlings hasn't been a problem though!nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Fri, 20 Apr 2012 16:07:54 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242822,from=rss#post242822https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242822,from=rss#post242822I really do think the biggest issue is that the seeds were old, more than anything else. BUT, I did use one of those tray type green house things with the soil discs that 'grow' when you pour warm water on them. DH and I have decided we'll continue to use the trays, but we'll remove the discs if theres any in it, and use our own mix...and just crumble the discs up into our flower beds or wherever. Rebecca, I had them in that tray on a shelf near a window that gets a good bit of sunlight every day. It's a Southwest window, so gets some intense afternoon sunshine. I don't have a permanent place to start indoor plants, so doing a grow light isn't really an option. I would LOVE to have a small, walk in greenhouse outside where I could put grow lights and all that good stuff. DH and I have looked at some that just have enough room for like one person to stand in, and enough room to put shelving along the 2 side walls and the back wall. That would be all I'd need. I've realized that the soil in those discs isn't the best stuff, either, so that's why we'd just do away with it and use a blend of potting soil, perlite and composted cow manure, with some of the dirt from where they'd be transplanted to mixed in as well. DH did that with some other seeds, and man, they are just going nuts! Since I already bought most of the herbs, I may take out what was done in the tray, and do a mix like DH did, and retry some of the seeds of the stuff I've not gotten plants of yet. See if that makes a difference. If not, then I'll be more sure that the seeds are just old. I'll have my herbs, one way or the other! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Thu, 19 Apr 2012 23:02:50 +0000 Re: Seeds and plantinghttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242819,from=rss#post242819https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p242819,from=rss#post242819Seed starting can be discouraging.. but don't give up! Where did you start your seeds this year? On a window sill, under lights? I have a neighbor who says that using growing lights makes a huuge difference, I haven't tried it yet, and I know that my seedlings are not as tough looking as they could be. I start mine in a southern exposure window, on one of those four shelf covered in plastic greenhouse shelves. They do okay..
