Re: Spring 2012 kidding season

Whew, last of the kids born yesterday!

I got a call at work that Elise was in labor and things weren't looking good. emoticon She had been pushing for about 30 minutes - that's just about the max time you can give a goat before interventions are needed. But at that time, the nose of the baby appeared. Now, that might sound like a good thing, but the HOOVES are supposed to come out first, like the kid is diving into the world. This meant BOTH legs were back. We've had lots of times when one leg was back.

It's the same technique to help when both are back. You push back on the nose and feel around the side of the body until you can careful fish the other leg out. We've had some that this was done to successfully and other does that just pushed through and delivered with one leg back before we could assist. But Elise was obviously struggling.

The vet called while I was on the phone with Mom - frantically doing research since the usual technique was NOT WORKING. The kid was BIG. So I found some more info, texted it to mom and just waited. And waited. And waited. about 20 minutes later, I'd had enough. At this point, either the kid was delivered or dead. I called and they all acted surprised I was worried! SHEESH! Apparently on the very next contraction, Elise just forced that big sucker out, and then quickly and easily delivered a second one. It all just happened so fast, they forgot about me! emoticon

One boy and one girl! Everyone, mama included, is healthy and happy! Again we have a black and white one (the girl) but instead of the straight 'deer' coloring, he has a white band on the front of this body. Very pretty!

Phew! So glad all three are fine.

They are so cute! And probably have no idea what a scare they gave you and all the other humans. Too bad you didn't get many girls this year.
