Spring harvest!

It's here, it's spring! too bad the real spring crops won't actually be in for many more weeks. Ah well, a few new things are already showing up. We should have peas soon if the weather holds!

Image

We've got the LAST of the broccoli in the bottom left. Then collard greens and gorgeous white lady turnips. Baby spinach and a salad mix that has edible flowers! the greens are a mild mustard and finally joi choi which is a lot like bok choi.

Nice harvest!! Of course, since nothing's been planted here, we won't get anything for a while yet.

I know you'll be happy to get a bit larger variety now that it's Spring. Could eat those turnips just like they are!!!! emoticon

Re: Spring harvest!

I got lazy and didn't post harvest pics here! emoticon

BUT...the spring harvest is TRULY in now! I was sooo excited to see what came in my basket this week. Couldn't believe it!

Image

A HUGE Joi choi, carrots, cabbage, GREEN BEANS, turnips, beets, SUGAR SNAP PEAS and mustard!

We ate about half the peas before we even got the rest of the veggies in the fridge. They are so good! And I have no idea how the farm got the green beans producing this early. I know I planted late, but mine are just sprouting through the soil now! They must have planted before the last frost date and just covered. I really need some row cover at home to extend the seasons...

WOW!!! emoticon NICE haul!!!! And, yeah, green beans this early is astonishing! The peas....eh, usually in May here if they get in the ground at a reasonable time, so, guess depending on when they were planted, it may be about right for the peas.

So far, we've not gotten anything else in the garden other than the small lettuce bed, but I think DH plans on trying to get stuff planted this coming week, since the signs are good for most of the week.

Hope the rest of your harvests are this plentiful!!! emoticon emoticon

Re: Spring harvest!

I did find out they had covered the beans at the farm. I'm still surprised they got them quite so early. Even if you cover tomatoes, you have to wait for it to be pretty warm for the fruit to set. Guess beans are different!

Here's some of the food I made with last week's haul.

And more awesome spring veggies!

Image

The pile is fava beans. It's our first real crop of them. We grew them experimentally last year and the few plants did fine so we put in quite a few this year. I've only made something with fresh fava beans once before, so I'm excited to use them.

And zucchini! emoticon

Loved all the food picks on your blog. Some, I know, you've posted here...others you hadn't. That one salad was really bright! Very pretty!!

We've still not gotten anything else in the garden. Either not good planting days, or too wet!

Re: Spring harvest!

Half way through spring...and it's already starting to feel like summer! The over-wintered veggies are really starting to peter out. This may be the last batch of kale. I won't miss it until the fall! I usually get kinda sick of the same stuff toward the end of a vegetable's season. But then I start to miss it again after a few months. I actually like following the cycles of fresh produce like that though.

Anywho, here's the farm harvest from this week!

Image

I'm pretty excited about the onions. There are just a few ready but we have TONS planted!

But I got a special treat that didn't go out in the baskets for everyone else...

Image

Terrible snap shot, but I was more interesting in scarfing them down than getting a good pic! emoticon

Oh, and one more thing! We harvested the cucumber from our very own garden. It never made it to the fridge:

Image

She ate almost the whole thing!
