I even took it to Texas with me, and it stayed in the truck the entire time! As a matter of fact..it's STILL in the truck! Just not a priority at the moment...so, yes, let's just put it off till maybe October, when things settle down a bit for everyone. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Sat, 21 Jul 2012 23:14:09 +0000 Re: May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243751,from=rss#post243751https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243751,from=rss#post243751Sounds like a plan. I haven't even gotten it ... even the Kindle edition is quite expensive.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Fri, 20 Jul 2012 06:33:27 +0000 Re: May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243750,from=rss#post243750https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243750,from=rss#post243750I think we need to put this book off till maybe Fall. There is just too much going on for all of us right now and, to be honest, I've not even started it...still yet! So....what do y'all think of just holding off on discussion till maybe September or October? nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Thu, 19 Jul 2012 20:49:22 +0000 Re: May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243357,from=rss#post243357https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243357,from=rss#post243357I've not even started on it yet! Between Turindar's book and the theater, it kind of got left behind! LOL I've finished Turindar's book today (WOW....y'all need to get that book if you've not already...GOOOOOD READ!!!!) and I'm done with the theater till I get back from Texas, so I'll try to get started on it during this down time. I'll take it with me to Texas if I've not finished it before I go. I leave 2 weeks from today..so, not sure if I'll get it all read by then or not. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Mon, 28 May 2012 22:09:34 +0000 Re: May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243344,from=rss#post243344https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243344,from=rss#post243344How's everybody doing on the book? I keep finding myself bringing it up in conversations. Must have made quite the impression on me!nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Fri, 25 May 2012 18:31:10 +0000 Re: May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243224,from=rss#post243224https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243224,from=rss#post243224I've not even started it, yet. I got it several days ago, but I've been so busy with my upcoming cook-out on Sunday, and the theater, I've hardly had time to think. HOpefully I'll get some down time and can do some reading. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Fri, 11 May 2012 03:15:39 +0000 Re: May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243210,from=rss#post243210https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243210,from=rss#post243210Oh, goodie. I get to save a few Euro, then, because I doubt I can find it used anywhere.    nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Thu, 10 May 2012 16:24:55 +0000 Re: May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243206,from=rss#post243206https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243206,from=rss#post243206There are a few unimportant diagrams of some pieces of wood that are cut for part of a barn raising. Does it have many pictures?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Thu, 10 May 2012 12:38:05 +0000 Re: May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243186,from=rss#post243186https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243186,from=rss#post243186During a bad bout of insomnia, I finished the book already! Loads to talk about with this book I think. Can't wait for others to finish...anyone else joining in? I think it's worth the read!nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Mon, 07 May 2012 20:18:37 +0000 Re: May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243152,from=rss#post243152https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243152,from=rss#post243152I should be getting my copy in the next few days....will be interesting, I think.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Mon, 07 May 2012 03:36:47 +0000 Re: May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243120,from=rss#post243120https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243120,from=rss#post243120Even though I picked it as a homesteading book, there turns out to be some interesting religious content! Of course, the Amish-type community has a strong religious base, so I should have figured there would be. I'm really enjoying it so far. Good quick read with funny anecdotes.nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Fri, 04 May 2012 17:02:51 +0000 Re: May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243108,from=rss#post243108https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243108,from=rss#post243108I ordered the book just a bit ago, so I will be participating in this one as well. What little I read on Amazon, it seems like it will be a good read. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf1)Fri, 04 May 2012 03:32:28 +0000 May Book: Better Offhttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243065,from=rss#post243065https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243065,from=rss#post243065We are branching out this month to explore the other side of what makes the Porch a great place to be - homesteading/simple living! Better Off: Flipping the Switch on Technology by Eric Brende What is the least we need to achieve the most? With this question in mind, MIT graduate Eric Brende flipped the switch on technology. He and his wife, Mary, ditched their car, electric stove, refrigerator, running water, and everything else motorized or "hooked to the grid," and spent eighteen months living in a remote community so primitive in its technology that even the Amish consider it antiquated. Better Off is the story of their real-life experiment to see whether our cell phones, wide-screen TVs, and SUVs have made life easier -- or whether life would be preferable without them. This smart, funny, and enlightening book mingles scientific analysis with the human story to demonstrate how a world free of technological excess can shrink stress -- and waistlines -- and expand happiness, health, and leisure. You can find it on Amazon for about $11 (plus S&H) and Abebooks for about $4 (total!). And don't forget to check your local library too! The book is 234 pages and is a light read (I just started it). Hopefully we can all get it done by June but since we started this thread late (was supposed to happen April 15th!), we can of course extend the period to read it. Just post in this thread if you are going to read it and when you get the book finished!nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Wed, 02 May 2012 15:38:55 +0000
