At least now you have a temp fix and can let the dog out.   nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Tue, 08 May 2012 15:21:16 +0000 Fencing in the pre-dawn light...https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243187,from=rss#post243187https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p243187,from=rss#post243187Besides the garden and the "livestock" (aka pet ducks), there are always any number of other projects going on around our little urban farm. This morning wasn't one of those planned projects though. It was "oh, crap, better get that fixed NOW." Our back fence line has been suffering from the wind. There is some sort of funnel effect that drives wind HARD North-South along the back of the property. The fence back there is positioned just so it catches it a bad way too. Occasionally, we shore up fence posts and lament that we need to do "something" before it falls down. Well, "something" was never done (we really didn't know what exactly we wanted to do) and last night's storm finally did a section in, right on top of our one wildflower patch! We had just come in from the garden at dusk when the wind suddenly picked up. Things went FLYING all over the yard even though we had been careful to prepare for the storm. The wind was simply crazy. I feared for my untrellised tomatoes but didn't really think about anything else. We all enjoyed the craziness from inside. Willa even pulled her chair up to the back door and watched the show! That one is not afraid of thunder and lightening! This morning I really got to see the aftermath. The wind had blown so hard that rain came in the 6" gap below the shop door (it's like a garage door) that we leave so the cats can go in and out. The floor was wet the entire length of the shop - over 50 feet. We have stuff in there that I never imagined had to be protected from rain. Tonight is going to be a big clean-up - I just didn't have time this morning. The real problem was, of course, the fence. Something had woken me up early (something that weighs about 5 lbs and kicks my bladder...) and everyone else was happily asleep, so I set about tackling the job myself. We couldn't even let the dog out until this was fixed, so I needed to get on it. Plus, there are more storms tonight and this was now a weak spot in the fence line and could lead to more damage. I pulled the cross boards off and piled them up on our side of the fence. I thought I could get away with just taking down two of the 10 foot sections, but I wanted to be able to completely reset any of the fence posts that had pulled up. So 30 feet had to come down. Finally, I had a nice big gap in the fence and had tamped in the posts on either side to make them stronger and vertical again. Ok, now what? I remember that we had ONE t-post left from our cucumber trellis project. And a roll of 6' chicken wire that hubby had been pestering me to toss out (it's been used a couple of times and has seen better days). With a smug feeling about my pack-rat ways, I went and collected the supplies and erected a temporary fence across the gap. You can probably not even see it in the picture, but it's chicken wire the same height as the fence. Whew. It was 7:45 by this time and I headed inside to make breakfast for the family and pack lunches. I had to wake those two slugs up...blissfully slept through the whole ordeal! (I would have made hubby help had he not been up until 2 AM working on a crash project for work. He usually doesn't get out of chores like this!)nondisclosed_email@example.com (TexasMadness)Tue, 08 May 2012 14:14:55 +0000
