Samhain

Anyone doing any Samhain celebrations tonight?

I think I want to try to have a "dumb supper" (Spirit Supper)...and see who shows up. Hubby may or may not go along, but lets hope. AND I hope my little Sister is the one who comes, I know she had to leave without being able to say goodbye everyone she loved.
I hope she tries to contact me.... emoticon

We went 100% Halloween this year but I may whip something up for Dia de los Muertos!

Hubby was not into it. I think it scared him. So we had a regular dinner, then did the trick or treating with the kids coming.

Later after Hubby was asleep, I tried to open myself to any spirit that may have been present. Don't know if anything really happened or it was just my emotions. But I have a picture on my wall of my sister....and while looking at it was overwhelmed with sadness....First time I've cried in a long time. emoticon
I'm fine now.... emoticon

Interesting experience Queeny. I've never connected with a spirit so I don't know how it would feel. I usually do the celebration altar kind of thing with mementos from deceased loved ones. It's nice to have those reminders around. Sounds like you did a good thing - whether it was from your sister's spirit or just you needing to let go of some emotional energy.

Our celebration will be on Friday. Possibly. The in laws are here and not sure what I can get done (it's nearly impossible to organize anything while they are here...I don't get it!). I mostly just want to make some pan de muerto and put marigolds around the house. Willa is still too young to really talk about her ancestors but my mom might be interested in telling some stories.

Re: Samhain

I did not have the time to do anything special Wed. night. I was so worn out by the time I got home, I crashed on my chair and played a bit online (something that didn't require a great deal of thought), then went to bed and slept like the dead for about 6 hours.

I was afraid to do my usual...Ancestral Dinner with meditation, for fear I'd fall asleep during the meditation time. Plus, I was alone this year. DH had to work over-night. I did tell Dad if he was around, he could come and talk to me...but guess he was busy elsewhere. It was a rather quiet night...so, apparently that is what I needed. Otherwise, I would have had some kind of activity at some point.

Re: Samhain

We had a great little celebration tonight.

We collected cempasúchitl (marigolds) from the garden, along with Mexican oregano, and made neat little bouquets from them. The marigold is the typical flower used to honor the dead.

We also made pan de muerto - a sweet egg bread (like brioche of challah) with an orange sugar glaze on top. It was possibly the ugliest pan I've seen but it tasted great! It's supposed to have a round ball on top but it sunk during the second rising. Great texture though.

My mom told some stories about her grandmother but then things got off topic and we just sat around chatting.

It was fun and nice. Maybe next year we will do something more formal!

We did one more little thing. On Sunday we ate lunch near the Texas State Cemetery. Even though it was several days after the official holiday, I thought it was still the right season to stroll through the cemetery. Willa had never been and she loved it. It's an absolutely gorgeous place and walking around the hills you see so much history. To be buried there, you have to have made a significant contribution to Texas history. This is Confederate Field:

We stopped at the graves of so many famous people like Barbara Jordan (first black senator in Texas, first black female southern US representative), Tom Landry (Cowboys football coach for nearly 30 years), Stephen F. Austin, and many war heroes.

My family doesn't have a family plot to visit on Dia de los Muertos so maybe we will just go to the state cemetery from now on!

Saijen...we only get what we seem to need. You obviously needed rest! emoticon

TM....that bread makes me hungry. I've only ever had it once, a friend made it...fabulous!
Willa does look like she is really soaking up that environment.

I love old cemetery's, I've been through many and always felt at peace. Most are incredibly informative, but also incredibly beautiful places in and among themselves just to take a walk in... emoticon
