My first catering gig!

Last week I asked my brother what I could do to help out his non-profit art advocacy organization. I have mentioned in the past one of the things they do - the East Austin Studio Tour. Over a hundred artists open their doors for 2 weekends and you can wander in, see how they work, buy some paintings/ceramics/whatever. It's an awesome adventure to go. I really had no idea what he would ask for - I thought maybe stuffing envelopes or something else equally mundane. But he asked me to cater some events!

He is now the property manager of a building that has 50 artist studios and 5 big galleries. It just opened (it's an old building that was remodeled) and it's going to be a great place, just taking a lot of work right now. His non-profit has one of the big galleries but there is nothing scheduled until September. A lot of people don't know exactly what they do, so he wants to host "happy hours" to inform people of their work as well as get potential donors. And he wants me to cater them! I was truly thrilled he thought I was up to the task.

So I've put together a menu for the first event - date yet to be determined but sometime next month. We are testing the recipes this week. No recipe is brand new, but I want to make sure everything is primo. I'm using all local produce and animal products. That's going to be part of the statement "Local art group supports local economy" kind of thing.

I'll post the final menu and some pictures soon. I'm so excited!

Sounds great! And of course, if you use produce from the farm, you can promote the farm.

All the best, I'm sure the sheer mass of things would scare me.

OH TM!!! emoticon
That is totally wonderful! emoticon
Keep track of your time and expenses. There may very well be people who attend these functions, that want to hire you to do something for them and at least you will have some idea as to cost quoting. emoticon

I thought about doing that Queeny, but then it would become a "job" instead of something that I just want to share with my brother and his group. My schedule is pretty full but I want to do this for him! On the other hand, if I even did a paying gig once a month is would be more money than NOT doing it... emoticon

Well, you can try out how it goes, and then decide whether you feel like doing it again.

You don't have to decide on this right now, or even this month. Do it a few times, see how it works out - and then decide on the next step.

[sign in to see URL] fun!!!

As a member of a non-profit myself, a suggestion. As Queeny [sign in to see URL] track of your expenses and [sign in to see URL] it's very possible that there may be grant funds available for such things as the catering for these events. It's something your brother could look [sign in to see URL] it is an expense, and he's using this to further his non-profit, it's not outside the realm of possibility for a grant in the future. Also, have him check with the town's Chamber of Commerce to see if the town has grants available for things like this. I know we get a grant from our town every year, so that's something to look into as well, if he's not already. Check the major banks for grant opportunities (you'd be so surprised at where some of our money comes from!)

Much luck on everything for you both, and I hope his 'happy hours' works out like he's hoping. It sounds like an excellent [sign in to see URL] one that will bring people in.

I think it's [sign in to see URL] he is in the non-profit art business (is this ALL arts or just visual arts?) and so am I. Maybe we can share ideas for financing stuff (I'm the treasurer for our Arts Council).
