Farm Volunteering

Volunteering is going awesome. I've spent a lot of wet, muddy days out there though!

Here are just two pictures from the first day we went before I signed on:

Willa and the pigs:

Some rows of broccoli:

We harvested the first fall green bean crop on [sign in to see URL] the pouring rain! I didn't expect it to rain so I wasn't wearing boots. I was sopping wet. And the van we drove to the lower fields in got stuck in the mud so we had to walk out - probably just half a mile, but it was an adventure.

I missed today because I was home with sick Willa (and even if she had been well enough to go to school, I was a zombie from being up with her all night!). The kiddos are out of school Friday so I'm missing that too! I need to get dirty again sometime soon!

Here are the vegetable share bags we packed today. 23 of these as well as 13 "half" bags as well. I spent most of my day doing that and then sorting/cleaning 200 lbs of squash!

It amazes me they use the canvas bags. They must go through so many of those from people not returning them and them just getting worn out over all the deliveries.

Of course, they do pack the produce in plastic bags (like 1/2 lb of green beans in a plastic bag like at the grocery store) but they do try to use the least waste!

The girls' preschool had a lot of leftover pumpkins from Halloween - the kind that doesn't make good eating. We took them to the farm I'm volunteering on and feed them to the huge pigs. These pumpkins were all rather large - bigger than my head. So you can see how big the daddy pig (Spot) is!

I bet the pigs loved them! And yes, that's one huge daddy there.

This is really neat!! Sounds like you're having a good time and enjoying not just the farm, but helping others!

I can't get over how long Willa's hair has gotten!!!!!
