A Study on Meditation - good stuff

Just found this today, which I really think is good to know - and another reason to practice meditation. I know it's good for me!

]Meditation for Anxiety, Depression?

So, meditation seems to help with anxiety, depression, and even pain management. And it does no harm. In fact, going within and centering is certainly a good thing.

Let's do this! emoticon

When my pain has broken through all the pain meds I am allowed at a time, many times I'll do my best to "zone out", using a mantra (silently, since I get looked at like I'm [sign in to see URL] comments [sign in to see URL]) that I [sign in to see URL]'s more an actual chant to raise energy, but it works for some pain management. I honestly think that because I do some of these things, it's what has kept me off "head meds" for close to 5 years now!!

Mantra of any kind will focus your mind - pulling thought to a single point instead of letting it fly around all over, as is usual, will help with nearly any aspect of life. Pain is a signal that is made worse by the random action of thoughts. Centre those thoughts and you will minimise the pain. It works because you are controlling the amount of nerves being used to send the pain signal. Pain is not real, in any way, it is a creation of the body, to signify damage. Because of this we can limit the signal by centring thereby lessening the pain. Not magic, but science.

That's a great description of mantra, muladzh.
On another thread, Firle asked about mantras I use. SOmetimes I simply focus on the inhale and exhale. Sometimes I use a simple, silent two syllable mantra (one syllable on the inhale, one on the exhale) -- like I AM or BE STILL. Anything will work. I also have a mantra given to me by my yoga tradition but I only say that silently. I use that often.

I also like your description of pain. I remember being exposed to similar thinking during some yoga training.

I think meditation is amazing and effective.

For many thousands of years, wise men have taught meditation to the masses. It works just as well today as it did then. It is the only thing that can claim that record.

I think you meant to say meditation, not medication, but yeah. It's an ancient form to be used for many things.

Cat, you doing the breathing is another thing I tend to do, especially if I'm nauseated. Most of the time, it helps, not always, but I'll take what I can get! Even through some intense pain, I will do Lamaze type breathing that I learned with my pregnancies. You get so focused on the breathing patterns and pacing yourself that the pain eventually goes away, and you're still doing the breathing! LOL.
