Re: Egg, egg..where are you, egg?????

There is a slim possibility we have a fox or skunk around that could be causing some problems with the hens. We had noticed a pair of foxes holed up under a tree about 15 feet from the chicken yard, but they moved on just a day or so after we spotted them.

We had 6 hens, one of those [sign in to see URL] what we have no clue, so we're down to 5 hens and 2 roosters. As for 'treading' we've not noticed anything of that nature. The hens are in better condition now than when we got them. They had pecked each other so badly at their previous home that 4 of the 6 had no feathers at all on their backs (they weren't in with roosters at all there), heads and in some cases, some wing feathers were also gone.
I keep telling DH that I think we need to get rid of one rooster, for sure (the more aggressive one), as I feel there's just not enough hens for 2 roosters. He seems to think it's [sign in to see URL] since he grew up with chickens his entire life, he knows more than I do (shrugs).

We don't have oyster shells, but we crush up egg shells and feed them back to the hens. That's what my ex and I would do when we raised Bantams (something I will NEVER do again if I can help it!!). They get all manner of produce, the laying pellets, chicken scratch, cracked corn, and DH keeps a thing in there that looks kind of like a salt block for them.

We just aren't sure what else to do/try. I just have to talk DH into getting rid of that one rooster, and I'd almost be willing to bet things will get better.

Sounds like you've got the nutrition nailed. You'd likely have other signs if predators were harassing them. We occasionally have a rat come in and steal a duck egg. The next day the ducks refuse to lay in the nest area at all and the eggs are all over the ground. If you had a rat or suck sneaking eggs, the girls would be finding other places to hide them. If a fox was harassing them, they would be flighty miserable birds.

Still a mystery! Do try getting rid of a [sign in to see URL] both even! Last thing I can think of.

Our Wyandotte has decided to start laying again, but not frequently. We've gotten about 3 eggs off of her in the last 3-4 weeks, but she's the only one laying. She's also the only one who is consistently getting out of the chicken yard! Apparently, it's time to clip wings again! We couldn't find her the other [sign in to see URL] finally found her in the top of the old barn, snuggling down for the night! LOL She pretty much sticks around when she gets out, and the one loose dog doesn't seem to bother her, so at least that's a good thing.
Of course, with things as they are at the moment, we may have to give them ALL up if we can't find a home that's not restricted toward livestock!

Hmmm, if she is getting out AND laying, it really makes me wonder about the roosters!

It's interesting that when she lays, it's while she's in the chicken yard. So far, we've not found eggs outside of the yard. We've still not gotten their wings clipped, but need to tend to that before much longer! Last thing we need is the landlord fussing about the chickens running loose!!!

Someone mentioned putting a dab of cayenne in the chicken feed, to trick their bodies into a warmer temp to get them laying again.

[sign in to see URL] whatever [sign in to see URL] hens are laying again! Still not getting eggs every day, but it seems as if all 3 are laying, finally. We need to clip wings again, as Charlotte has figured out she can fly out of the chicken yard, so we're not sure if she's laying any eggs out in the grass or not. Keeping an eye on things, for sure, though. It's nice to finally have fresh eggs instead of the store-bought ones!!!

I'm sure not complaining!!!!! We think, perhaps, the Wyandotte may be trying to sit on a nest!! Not sure yet.

Thankfully, if we get the place we're wanting, we'll be able to take our chickens with us! We were there earlier today (post in Open Circle about that) and I heard a rooster off in the distance somewhere! It's not a restricted area, so that makes me very happy!!
