I am not a fan of cold, ice, snow, chills, slipping, or any of the other things generally associated with winter, or it season. So, finding something to like in it is impossible for me. Particularly this unusually cold one.

I am not a huge fan of [sign in to see URL] snow is really pretty, but it makes me hurt SOOOO badly, plus, I hate if I have to get out in it. I have no problems driving in the stuff, but [sign in to see URL]'s a whole other ball game!

I do like that I can always add clothing, or blankets to warm up (can only take off so much in the summer to cool [sign in to see URL]), [sign in to see URL], not a big fan of Winter, at all.

Being unwell for a while is unusual for me, first time in years, but it certainly makes winter miserable - I can't get warm. I will be really glad to get some stable sunlight again.

Today is a beautiful day, lovely sunrise, very clear sky - and frost, as fits January in the latitude.

I love the beauty of it. And walking to work, I didn't feel the cold, either.

Re: What do you like about the Winter season?

It rained overnight for fifteen hours, the river is higher than I have seen it in the five months we have been in the house, with it pretty close to the road in two places this morning, but had receded by late afternoon. The forecast suggests we may have sunlight again, by Thursday, but they are not too accurate round here.

Fortunately all the snow is gone, so the roads are clearer, and much safer - people here have no idea what to do when snow is around. Most of them do slow down, but a few drive like there is nothing there, and usually end up in a ditch.

For definite next winter, I need to have done a few things with this house to make it warmer - I don't know if I can afford new windows yet, but certainly getting a solid fuel cooking range, and water heater is essential. We have only had short black outs, so far, but in a totally electric house, things get awful fast.

Yes, it's good to have backup heating.

I remember as kid we had a storm that cut out electricty, and the heating wouldn't work. My mom put us all into the car and took us to the institute where my dad worked. He hated it, but we were installed in the library and played quietly. And in the evening, electricity was back.

We later installed a fireplace in the house. emoticon The current owners replaced that with a Danish oven.

The trend in the US is to rid all houses of fireplaces, wood-stoves and cookers, then fit electric everything - that is totally crazy - just one twenty four hour black-out, could destroy the pipes, and freeze people.

We will be fixing the chimney, buying the stoves and keeping warm despite the electric - it will be way cheaper too.

I'm so surprised at how many houses don't have fireplaces! We love ours even though it's not the most efficient. We need to get an insert but every year we put it off until the short winter season is over. It's plenty good for the times we need it but could be much better. Our house was by no means designed to be heated by the fireplace - all the bedrooms are at the far other end and through a twisty hallway. But the fireplace keeps the living room and kitchen toasty. So we usually crank it up for the time we are awake and then snuggle down for the night with the house heater on low.

Another winter treat for me: sitting around a campfire with hot mulled wine! That was splendid this weekend! emoticon
