My Classes

My class day is going from Thursday to Wednesday. I'm so far ahead of the other students it's not funny. High Priestess and High Priest feel it's not fair to for me to be held [sign in to see URL] talked about it last night and we all decided that a class for just me is the best solution. I'm almost done with the actual class part. The bulk of what I have left is the reading. After the book I'm on onw, I only have 5 more to go between now and July 8th. They did say that if I didn't get them all done, I can carry what's left over to my 2nd degree reading list. I really want to try to get them all done. I only have 8 weeks to [sign in to see URL] 5 books to read, so I have a LOT of reading to get done. I'm about half way thru 'The ABC's of Witchcraft' by Doreen Valente. It's a pretty good book and one I'd highly recommend.
[sign in to see URL]'m so far beyond excited about the upcoming initiation it's not [sign in to see URL]. I can hardly wait to get in circle.
I've gotten used to being skyclad with the HPs and so far, with one other student. It's just not an issue anymore. After I'm initiated, there will only be the 3 of [sign in to see URL] and the HPs. The other 2 initiates are taking some time off, they say for health and family reasons. Not sure that's true, but who am I to say?
[sign in to see URL] of exciting things, good things going on for me in my path right now.

Re: My Classes

I have some questions, if you don't mind answering. I'm just curious about some things. I am solitary, so don't really understand covens at all.

What are the benefits of going through the classes (besides knowledge, lol)? How do the high priestess's get to be who they are?

Are covens run like a membership where you have to take the classes before you can be in a circle? What happens if you believe most things, but don't believe everything your coven does?

Feel free to only answer what you are comfortable answering. I've never been around a coven, and just from what I have heard and read I've always been curious about these things.

Re: My Classes

[sign in to see URL] am SOO sorry I am just now seeing this.

I'll answer what I have the knowledge to answer.

Besides the knowledge gained from the classes, it is also a "weeding out" process for the HPs. If someone is willing to do the work and read all the materials and books and do it within a time frame, then it helps them to know the person is genuinely interested. It is also good to get a background on the tradition the coven follows, and helps the pre-initiate to understand more fully the implications of being in a coven, what is expected of them, to meet the coven's Goddess(es) and God(s), to meet the coven's Watchers, etc.

The HPs get to their position thru 3 degrees of study. pre-initiate is 1st degree. After initiation, you begin your 2nd degree studies, then on to 3rd degree. There is only one High Priest(ess) in a coven. To become and HP, you would start your own coven after you "hive off" of your previous one. After initiation, females are [sign in to see URL] are [sign in to see URL] not HIGH.

Some covens initiate solely on a person's desire to join. Others do the studying, as I said, as a way to weed out those who wouldn't bring good to the group as a [sign in to see URL] ones who are too lazy to study or do the work involved not only in pre-initiate, but afterwards. I like the idea of the classes. It's a good way to measure someone's ability to deal with coven activity.

If you believe most of what the coven believes, then you should be OK. Usually, the rest will follow, and if it doesn't then it may be the wrong coven for the person. It is always best to be of one mind as much as [sign in to see URL] mean, after all, we are talking about human [sign in to see URL]. So far, there is nothing I don't agree with within this group. It is a new tradition based on the British [sign in to see URL]'s the Appalachain Tradition, so some things are having to be altered somewhat to accomodate this area, but the basic structure is there.

The [sign in to see URL] have to [sign in to see URL] help a person with their own life and spirituality. Not all the covens have the same materials, or reading lists. A lot depends on the HPs and how they learned or were initiated. I've grown SO much in the last few months, in my spirituality, in my love for myself and my love for things around me. My tolerance has increased (not a whole lot, but enough to [sign in to see URL]). I'm happier than I think I've ever been. My physical health seems to be improving, as is my mental health. I still have some really nasty days with the physical health, but they are more tolerable, simply because I've learned how to focus my energies to do good for myself.

I was solitary for almost 3 years, and never thought I'd be interested in coven [sign in to see URL], did my tune [sign in to see URL]. My HP has become my best [sign in to see URL] quickly.
I will be the first to be initiated out of this [sign in to see URL]'m so far ahead of the rest, but not because they are [sign in to see URL] has been pulling double shifts at work and the other's father has cancer, and has been placed with [sign in to see URL] she goes a lot to KY to see him. Life has a way of getting in the way sometimes.

If you are interested [sign in to see URL] a coven that is willing for you to study with them, even though you may not wish to be initiated. Sometimes, it's just nice to have like minded people around to discuss stuff with in person.

HOpe this answered your [sign in to see URL] [sign in to see URL]'m really sorry I didn't see this sooner.
If you have more [sign in to see URL] away. I'll do my best to answer them for you.

Re: My Classes

Thanks for answering me so well Saijen. I wasn't worried about you not answering me. I thought they might be too personal of questions, but the way you answered them was right on, and what I wanted to hear.

You are right about how you are so happy. It's very apparent in your posts, and I am very happy for you.

The way to get into the coven kind of threw me, because my big gripe with churches is that you have to prove yourself worthy. Sometimes putting yourself into a group where you are not 100% behind everything you believe. I like how you said it is a weeding processes. Just like friends, after a time you weed yourself down to who you really enjoy and who are willing to give their friendship. I've noticed in the Pagan world that a lot of times being a Pagan is a phase, and wanes after time. It is hard to get close to someone when they could change interests in 6 months time.

[sign in to see URL] so much for explaining. I'm very happy for you, and now I understand a little more with what you are going through. emoticon

Re: My Classes

Hi bbird....
I'm glad I was able to answer the questions satisfactorily.
I went back and re-read what I'd written, and there's nothing I'd change.

I would like to say that in the weeding out [sign in to see URL]'s definitly a do or die thing. Any respectable coven is going to want people who are willing to do what is asked of [sign in to see URL] reason. Nothing that I've had to do so far has been out of reach, or unreasonable. Not only are the classes good for the HP's to weed [sign in to see URL] it's also a good way for a student to find out exactly what makes the HP's tick. If they're really freaky, if they're true Seekers, if they're just wanna-be's and don't have a real [sign in to see URL]'s a 2 way street there. I can honestly say that the HPs for the coven I'll be initiated into are true worshipers of the Goddess and [sign in to see URL] being over zealous or obnoxious about it. There are so many that take it to the far [sign in to see URL] those you need to watch out [sign in to see URL] classes work in the same way for the student, as they do for the teachers.

I had my last 1st degree lesson this past Saturday morning. It was to "meet" the Watchers. All I have left is the [sign in to see URL] have 3 books to go. I should have that done by my initiation date of July 8th (my 6th wedding [sign in to see URL]). I've already begun to work on remembering some things I'll have to know in circle at a not too distant future time. Shouldn't be too [sign in to see URL]'s the Watcher'[sign in to see URL] you have to know how to call them when you're making your circle. I won't "solo" doing a ritual for a while [sign in to see URL] it won't be too hard, I don't think.
This coven has ritual every month at the full moon (or as close as they can)..then [sign in to see URL] have a nice meal to help them ground. Everyone is supposed to bring food of some kind. Since I live so [sign in to see URL] nights I'll probably end up spending the night at the HPs.
That's something [sign in to see URL] a coven, you need to be able to get [sign in to see URL] well as humanly [sign in to see URL] everyone. If there is a [sign in to see URL] good HP will help to disolve the issue in a firm, fair [sign in to see URL] the advantage of all. The other students ..... we all get along really well. It's like we've known each other for years. It's really nice. And, I know I could call on any one of them for help if I needed [sign in to see URL] any time of day or night. It's a family structure with our group (should be with all covens). They are my sisters and my brother (only one guy at the moment). Such a wonderful feeling to know that I'm where I should [sign in to see URL] that I truly belong.

[sign in to see URL] a wonderful thing to say! Thank you! My spirit is so happy, and it's as if all the garbage I've had to deal with (and still do to an extent) just aren't worth getting my knickers in a twist over. I've learned a lot about myself, about self love and appreciation, about love and appreciation of all forms of [sign in to see URL] and untangible. I am truly happy with my decision to go with a [sign in to see URL] I'm even happier with who and what I am. Life is a joy [sign in to see URL] that's not been evident for me in an extremely long time. I'm so glad it shows in my posts.

Re: My Classes

[sign in to see URL]'ve had my last class for 1st [sign in to see URL] I only have 2 and a half books to [sign in to see URL] only 2 after this afternoon.
My initiation will be on the planned date, barring any problems with health or other things. It's hard to believe that it's just a month off now. I may see if they'll go ahead and give me the 2nd degree reading list IF I can get the other books read before the 8th, and get started on the new list. I'll be that much ahead if I'm able.
I have all the tools I was told to [sign in to see URL] my "homework" was done a LONG time back. I still have to memorize a couple of things, but that shouldn't be too hard.
It just amazes me how far I've come in a little over 4 months. As far as classes go, that is. I've known the HPs since October of last [sign in to see URL] months. The classes didn't start till February, either, so it's not been long.
Life is good! emoticon
