Today is the day!!
the stink from the blown air was terrible - it leaked so much it just dragged stink from under the house - insects used it as a free way into the house - giant spiders followed them in - we are glad to be rid of it.
We found coal yesterday, in Sneedville, and ordered two tons of it - that will last the summer, and get another two tons for the winter later. It gets delivered on Saturday if we can't change the date, or Monday if we can.
The chimney guy comes back today, and fits the lining, then connects the cookstove.. We are jumping up and down, with glee. Warmth in the house at last.
At the coal-yard, Froggy met a coal burning stove for the first time - she was very impressed with the amazing heat coming out of the thing, without the burt wood smell. She tells me now that she doesn't like the smell of woodsmoke - but doesn't mind the smell of the coal burning. it is a darned good job we found a coal burner - if we had any of the other new cook-stoves, it would have been wood.

Re: Background heating surprise
We now have an operational coal cook stove. And two tons of coal - the coal man decided to come today, instead of tomorrow. So we did not have to change the date after all.
The stove needs slow fires in it for a couple of days - we lit one, it burned a while, then went out - we had it too slow. lol. It will take a few days to get used to it.

Re: Background heating surprise
Muladzh,
Sounds like you're finally getting the house the way you want. I prefer wood smoke to coal. Coal, to me has a dirty smell. My father-in-law heated with coal, and it makes everything so sooty and black, coal dust everywhere. I don't exactly like gas heat, either...as it leaves a film on everything, and can also cause a black film to lay on things..especially windows/glass. Despite the issues on both of those...they are a much warmer type heat than forced air heat! And, I do intend to have gas heat as a secondary heat source in the new house. We have 3 gas heaters...one will go in the kitchen, one in the family room and probably the third in the basement. Most likely, we'll end up with a couple more for the basement.
I'm just happy that you're finally getting the heat and cooking options to where you want them!!!

Re: Background heating surprise
I agree, coal is dirty - or at least this commercial coal we were sold is - good quality smokeless is good fuel, but I can't find any anywhere - I have a few emails out to dealers, but nothing back yet.
We just need to find a few cords of seasoned wood, and we will be set.
We got poisoned with carbon monoxide from a gas heater - I won't have them in any where I live - ended up two years in a wheelchair from the poisoning. I know, they are usually safe, but ours were tampered with.

Re: Background heating surprise
Thankfully, there's never anyone around that would/could tamper with our heaters. We've been using the same ones for several years. We also have a carbon monoxide detector that we keep going. So far, so good.
Not sure you'll find the clean, smokeless coal around here. Most of what we have here is mined either in VA or KY, and is the kind you already have. I hope you can find some, though!!!!

Re: Background heating surprise
I experienced air conditioning (warm and cold) in the cabin I stayed, and I have to say that the constant draft is not fun.
I used to have a gas heater in the old apartment, which heated hot water and the heating system. That worked well, and was checked every year. However, these things can cause carbonmonoxyde poisoning if blocked (and yes, people die from that every year).
In this house, we have a hot water system that heats radiators (no cooling). It feels good, but I love to have an oven in a house to burn wood. My sis just switched to a pellet stove to augment the solar heating she has in her house.

Re: Background heating surprise
Pellet stoves are great - we have used them in RVs and houses - no good to cook on, and need power, but great at heating a room. (not a whole house though.)
