Re: The Mealmaster Coal Cooker

It's been a very long time since I cooked using wood, other than in a camp fire, but I loved when I did. Only did it once, but would SO enjoy using a wood cook stove. I think there is one up at DH's Dad's house, but since his Dad passed away, I doubt the girls (DH's sisters) would let us have it. It will most likely sit up there in the house, unused, and fall to ruin. I may ask, just for the sake of asking...who knows...I may get surprised! LOL.

I'm sorry the coal didn't work as well as you'd hoped. That's a very typical problem with coal around here. It's no wonder so many of our minors have lung problems!!!!! I'd much rather use wood.

I know you'll find the right fit..be it wood, coal....whatever, and it will work for you, perfectly!!!!

This is the Cook-stove, loaded with wood, and warming the kitchen. We cooked crescent rolls this morning, that came out cooked and a little brown topped, after eight minutes. We both love this stove...

The pan at the lower left side is in need of a clean - just got it today, from a friend. I will clean it tomorrow - I the griddle on the right side to clean as well - all the rest of the pans are good.

The heat on the left, over the firebox, is over 500 at the back, and 457 at the front. The middle is 500 at the rear, and 375 front, and the griddle is 350 rear, 200 front. The oven, at the top is 425, bottom 389..

The temperature in the room is 85˚F, with the old kitchen and living room over 70˚F, and the bedrooms a comfy 65.. Outside is 57˚ today.

In my childhood, we had an Aga stove, then a Rayburn. Had Rayburn stoves until I came to America, then a twenty year gap, until this stove - this one heats up the room more, but the size of the oven, and the heat of the hotplate makes both the Aga and Rayburn less appealing.

I rather like the top loading firebox too - much, much cleaner than a front opener - nothing falls out or blows out of the top.

Is the firebox the part at the very bottom that looks like a drawer? Where in the world did you find this stove, anyway? You've probably mentioned it, but I've not seen it.

Saijen, the firebox is a top loader - much cleaner than a front loader, but takes a bit of getting used to it. the draw on the bottom is a warming draw, that they suggest is used to keep pans in.. it gets to about 150˚ when the oven damper is closed. (open it lets the heat up the chimney, closed it routes it round the oven.)

It is a new stove, made by Knox Stove Works, in Knoxville, and we found it from one of the local dealers - not very local, about fifteen miles east of knoxville - you can get them cheaper by calling Knoxville Stove Works..

The place we bought it from is Rocky Top General Store - of country music fame - they carry them, or can get them for you, and they deliver, and place, free of charge.

I showed DH the pic and he said "That's almost identical to the one up at Dad's". If his sisters will let us have it, we may go get it, clean it up and use it downstairs when we can. I imagine it would cut canning time in half. We have a huge tree down in the yard, so maybe we can get it cut up and stack wood away from the house (prevent termites IN the house) to use for it. Just have to wait and see. The stove at my father-in-law's has been kept indoors, so it's not all rusted or being used for wild critter residence.

Re: The Mealmaster Coal Cooker

Once, long time ago, I took a stove out of a collapsed house in Scotland that had been in rain and snow for years, had weasels living it, and was very rusty. I had to rebuild the fireclay, but a wire brush cleaned it up. My Aunt has been using it every day for nearly thirty years, and has never had any problem with it. They are easy to fix, easy to clean, and wonderful to use.

It would be great if you get that one - they are really wonderful. If it were downstairs, it would heat the whole house (warm air rising)
