Re: Windows
Windows are so expensive! We still haven't replaced the single pane windows in our house. I don't recall the quote - I think I must have blacked out after getting it. I can't say which option I would choose though. I hate doing things twice so I might bite the bullet and go for the mid grade ones...

Re: Windows
With great trepidation, I asked the 'best' window man to come quote. Best by reputation, and recommended to my by tradesmen. He came out and showed me a really good double hung window, toughened glass, full screen, both panes hinge in.. I thought it would be expensive, but it isn't too bad. I can just afford to get them - 14 good quality windows, for less than $3700. This guy uses US made windows, knows the company, and gets a very good price for them. He will be ordering them on Monday, they will get here in a couple of weeks, then he comes and fits them. He made very sure that I understood that the price was for the windows, and fitting - nothing else to pay. The difference between these windows and the cheapest I could find anywhere, are very noticeable - these are double hung, 7/8th inch spacing between the panes, very high E rating (can't remember what off-hand - senior moment thing) and they look very nice. The guy has been in business seventeen years, and has used this company for fifteen of those years, he gave me a bunch of references, that we checked out today - everybody is really happy with the windows, and the guy that fitted them - all of them do recommend him to anyone who asks, and all of his business is recommendation - he does not advertise.
I certainly think the Goddess looked after me in this one. The very best windows, for less than the mid grade price..

Re: Windows
Mulazh, that wonderful news
Don't suppose you would be willing to tell us the name of the window company. I know I can't use your window fellow. But I may find a good one who installs the same window...

Re: Windows
That is great news! Glad you found an affordable option for good, quality windows. Great, too, that the installer has so many great references! Soon you'll be able to open windows in your house. You won't know how to behave.

Re: Windows
The novelty of opening windows will come just in time. Night-time temperatures in this neck of the woods keep much cooler than the daytime temps, so the windows will drag the temperature of the house down and night, and keep it cool longer during the day. This is good, because we opted not to spend the thousands of dollars fixing the central air. We had a limited budget, and plumbing, cook-stove, chimney, floors and windows seemed more important to us.

Thank you!
I so much prefer an open window, especially at night, over an AC!

Re: Windows
The windows are made by Lang Exterior - their website is not working, so I can't go there. We paid the deposit, and have a dna record, fingerprints, vehicle registration, and photograph of the guy, so if he runs with the deposit, we can get him.
He reckons they will be installed by May 24th, possibly earlier.
