I started some tomatoes and a few more peppers a few days ago. The snow is really melting fast! We'll be concentrating on picking up more deadfall and tinder off the ground and burning it; because we are in a drought here unless we get some rain. I'm so excited to get out in the garden again and be outside alot. catnondisclosed_email@example.com (MagiCat)Thu, 22 Mar 2007 11:56:40 +0000 Re: Goat and horse stories, garden plans...https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p593,from=rss#post593https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p593,from=rss#post593We have replanted the corn plot. We've had enough rain that they are looking a little better. The mares and foal spent about a week out, mostly over here, which was fine...UNTIL they ate the tops out of all the corn in the garden one night. It looks like the neighbor may have rented the land out, as someone has been hauling off junk. Don't know what kind of folks they are yet or what will happen to the horses and dogs.nondisclosed_email@example.com (finnabairpendragon)Thu, 08 Jun 2006 11:25:04 +0000 Re: Goat and horse stories, garden plans...https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p590,from=rss#post590https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p590,from=rss#post590Woah, that's awful damage! Some houses lost all their windows, lots of car damage. The paint was even *sandblasted* off some of the houses. yarrownondisclosed_email@example.com (ozark woodwyfe)Fri, 28 Apr 2006 01:14:49 +0000 Re: Goat and horse stories, garden plans...https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p588,from=rss#post588https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p588,from=rss#post588We had a hail storm two days ago. What scary stories. How terrible for the horse. Well, the happenings here will sound tame by comparison, but ... I laid out my square foot garden on Saturday Carrots are in the ground and all kinds of stuff is started in the house. We bring in this cobbled together, ugly metal shelf thing we made, with shop lights. A mini green house. Our hosue is small and the thing is ugly, but it does a great job. I am glad when the plants can get outside. This year with cold frames too, I'm really going to have fun. I have so many varieties of peppers planted - can't wait! I'm going to put spinach and lettuce in today, and maybe beets if I have time (working around my work-work, lol) catnondisclosed_email@example.com (MagiCat)Tue, 25 Apr 2006 13:09:57 +0000 neighborshttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p584,from=rss#post584https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p584,from=rss#post584Yes, this is the blind in one eye mare neighbors. I heard about someone from here getting arrested for trying to hire a hit man (think she met him down at the park in mammoth springs or something?) Nice neighbors! Finn, did you hear about our neighbors (thankfully not real close neighbors LOL) you know that sort of nasty/junky/working on cars all the time house not far after the Juntion of A&E (when you turn on E towards my house/alton) well saturday night Ed drove by and there were a bunch (12 or so) guys hanging out there, few minutes later Garland drives by and they are fighting. THEN the sound of squealing tires. Glenda hears the thud (I was inside and just heard the car) Some woman is screaming "you killed him, you killed him" Glenda & Ervin take off to see if they can help. YEP, they killed. Guy looked like he'd been either in the road or something. Hit him, threw in the ditch. Don't know the details (and with that bunch NO ONE will ever get the truth) some guy from Cherokee Village. yarrownondisclosed_email@example.com (ozark woodwyfe)Mon, 24 Apr 2006 14:31:34 +0000 horseshttps://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p581,from=rss#post581https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p581,from=rss#post581I think at this point, everyone is afraid to get involved with the family. I've known this for years, but now I know why. It's the smell of horses forced to eat weeds because the grass is all gone. We have always supplemented their feed because they weren't well cared for, but the last year and a half have kept me away from Missouri, caring for Mom and then her estate. While I was gone this spring, the couple split up, the wife hired a undercover cop instead of a hit man, and now the husband, who isn't a horse person, is in possession of the house, land, and animals. One of the mares foaled, and the baby starved to death because the mother didn't make enough milk. The remaining horses look like walking death. I can buy feed, but without grass or hay, I don't know if they can be rehabilitated. The local authorities don't have animal health on their radar; we've already tried that. We don't have the fences necessary to keep them in if we bought them. It's a bad situation.nondisclosed_email@example.com (finnabairpendragon)Sun, 23 Apr 2006 12:11:35 +0000 Re: Goat and horse stories, garden plans...https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p577,from=rss#post577https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p577,from=rss#post577Goats.....ummmmm, not yet! Garden.....well, the plan is for a small one this year since we will be moving in early May and will miss the optimal planting time. Probably just a couple raised beds. However, the new place comes with a small orchard (7 trees). Don't know what they are 'cause it was winter when we saw them. I'm hoping at least a couple are apple trees. Also a grapevine on a trellis and a big bramble patch. All woefully overgrown and in need of pruning. So we will focus on that, and building the chicken tractor and chicken coop. I love my chickens, but I need to have a less intimate relationship with them.....gotta get 'em out of the spare bedroom!nondisclosed_email@example.com (3ravens)Sat, 22 Apr 2006 08:38:12 +0000 Re: Goat and horse stories, garden plans...https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p576,from=rss#post576https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p576,from=rss#post576Goat's milk fudge - recipes? nondisclosed_email@example.com (pookshollow)Sun, 16 Apr 2006 00:28:37 +0000 Re: Goat and horse stories, garden plans...https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p575,from=rss#post575https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p575,from=rss#post575they look like some weird two-headed dragon when they both do it. Interesting musings there about goats talking to their unborn babies....might very well.....but then we all know *Ubians (as we Alpine folks call them) are a bit on the noisy side, hey...she is in early training, so THATS how they learn to be so noisy, they learn before they are born! Aaaahhhh...Cryastal Beach......that infamous wooden roller coaster that went out over the lake, or at least looked like it did when you rode it, think thats where I developed my fear of coasters at, not Dragon Mountain at Marine Land. Back in the day thats where our school always took the seniors to for the senior trip. Well...time to milk, have to make up 3 pounds of goats milk fudge today for a friend to take to her dog show next weekend. She also wants cheese in a few months. Sooooo best order more rennett. I did find a recipe for making cheese with soured milk as one of the starters instead of cultured buttermilk. I think I might adapt my one cream cheese or soft chevere recipe for that and see. I can't wait to make my feta either. Oh, think I'll post that recipe, it was a boo-boo that worked! Pretty soon you'll be swimming in milk. nondisclosed_email@example.com (MysticMT)Sat, 15 Apr 2006 14:00:32 +0000 Re: Goat and horse stories, garden plans...https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p574,from=rss#post574https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p574,from=rss#post574Well, we're not exactly near the Welland Canal, although I was born in Niagara Falls (Chippewa to be precise ). Our new place is quite literally across the road from Six Nations Indian Reserve, south of Brantford. Interesting area, historically, goes back a long way. I went to Crystal Beach a few times when I was wee as well - I remember lemon suckers and pony rides! Sara and Angel have discovered that they can get their heads and necks under the stall door - they look like some weird two-headed dragon when they both do it. I'll have to get some pics, they're so funny! I notice that Angel is "humming" a lot more lately, mostly when she eats, but other times as well. I wonder if she's talking to her unborn kid(s)? Or just being a mouthy Nubian! nondisclosed_email@example.com (pookshollow)Fri, 14 Apr 2006 21:23:17 +0000 Re: Goat and horse stories, garden plans...https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p573,from=rss#post573https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p573,from=rss#post573Pooks.....I know where the Welland canal is.....been there when I was a wee gal, beautiful area! So thats where you are loacted! On our old farm in western NY we could see across Lake Erie into Canada, Cryatal Beach area. We're finished with kidding season here and ended up with a buck yr with mostly boys, 21 boys and 5 girls. Not much going on right now, planting gardens and I should get busy soon and start, I am working on making a rock terrace style on the south side of my yard before it goes down the slope. Should be an interesting spot. I'll try to take pics later. Lots of rocks so i am working withy what I have instead of landscaping timbers. I plan on putting a bench there for sitting to watch the sun rise and moon rise. I want to plant herbs and flowers there. Its really windy though, the strong winds have come again so I hope its a cooler summer with more rain. Babies are all growing like weeds. Speaking of weeds, I've GOT to get the garden up and going. I'm so far behind this year. I ordered some roses back in Nov. They arrived yesterday (two new dawn climbers that I'm going to train up and around the porch. Ed is coming in next week to help me screen the front porch in! I so look forward to sitting out there in the evenings bug free!) I'm up to my elbows in chicks (and broodies. Have one hen sitting on eggs from my favorite hen -that the fox got & one hen sitting on turkey eggs) I have 20 or so chicks that I bought that are ready to move out into the *chickie playpen* during the day. I'm selling every egg that gets laid at the local beauty shop! Love the name, Curl Up & Dye hehehe.. every thursday I take egg, neighbor lady takes butter....got to love life in the boonies! yarrow -who is also DOWNSIZING her garden this year...just going to focus on a salsa garden and spend the summer trying to achive the *PERFECT* jar of salsa nondisclosed_email@example.com (ozark woodwyfe)Fri, 14 Apr 2006 01:27:17 +0000 Re: Goat and horse stories, garden plans...https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p571,from=rss#post571https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p571,from=rss#post571Pooks...the soon to be new family members sound so nice. I wish we could have a couple of goats here. I'm just afraid my chow would end up killing them. Maybe after he's gone on. Your drive sounds so nice and relaxing..even if it was a bit further than expected. DH and I were talking yesterday morning about our veggie garden plans for this year. I think we're going smaller this year. I have a freezer full of stuff we've yet to eat..some from 2 years ago. I can't see planting more when we've got so much yet. We are sharing our garden spot with DH's brother and his wife this year...so our not planting as much will give them plenty of room to do what they want. As for flowers....I'm still wanting to do my faerie garden under my big maple tree. I have a really cute gazing ball I wanted to put there, but it's glass and we lose a LOT of limbs out of that tree. I'm afraid it will get broken....so, it may end up going next to the porch by my hosta. At least there, the wind and limbs won't shatter it. It's a faerie asleep, draped over a mushroom. Her wings are upright, and they hold the gazing ball. Cute lil thing..it's only about 13 inches tall...including the gazing ball. Other than this...not sure what else we have planned for the yard/garden.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Saijen SilverWolf)Mon, 27 Feb 2006 17:38:59 +0000 Re: Goat and horse stories, garden plans...https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p570,from=rss#post570https://bthepaganporch.runboard.com/p570,from=rss#post570Well, since I'm here , had a busy day yesterday. We drove down to Tillsonburg and dropped off the little Nigerian doeling (the deal I had with the breeder) and had a look at a couple that he is holding for me. One is 9 years old and is coming to "retire" on our new farm. Her name is Beauty and she's a real sweetie - needs her hooves doing badly though! The other is a yearling doe, black and white like a belted Galloway cow. We'll be picking them up late March, early April when we get settled in. Then, we went cross-country over to the Niagara Peninsula to a little town called Thorold - it's right beside the Welland canal - to pick up a soft ice-cream maker that B. bought on eBay. Long drive, longer than we expected, but it was nice to cruise the back roads and just talk.
