Queeny: I'm sorry your dad is in such pain. You're right, though. It's better he's able to live and enjoy life now than cling to it in horrible pain.

Pain is a funny thing.. It can dominate someone's life, or not, depending on how pain is perceived by them. If it is allowed to dominate, it will do that, and life becomes harsh, but you don't have to accept that at all. What pain is really, is a signifier of damage, a warning: by embracing the discomfort, and welcoming it, the misery goes away, and the pain ceases to be dominant.

This I learned from my family, and has been proven to me literally thousands of times throughout my life. I am thought to have a high tolerance to pain, but that is not correct: many times I have forgoten to embrace it and have been in agony, until I remember, then the pain is stll there, just not causing the agony it did before. I have taught this technique to sufferers many times, and most felt better.

Queeny, I'm sorry your Dad is having such a hard time with pain! I do hope he can talk to the doc and make him/her understand!!!

Muladzh, I think the concept you're talking about is much like when I was told, at the age of 39, that by the time I turned 44 I would be in a wheelchair..for the rest of my life. I was told this by an ortho surgeon. I looked him in the eye and very bluntly said.."I refuse to accept that diagnosis". I am 52 now, and still no wheelchair. It's almost a matter of mind over pain.....sometimes though, when it's such a hard, all encompassing pain (full body, head to toes), chronic, it becomes harder and harder to put mind over matter.

I'm not sure what the hell I've done, but ever since DH and I went to Walmart last week, I have been in such pain that NOTHING I do is working..not the patches, not the Lortabs, not my meditation...NOTHING. I am almost afraid that I am having another issue with TOS...just not sure which side. There is no way I can tolerate another TOS surgery (it's so radical they make you go through psych therapy before they'll do it!). Sad thing is, it's not just my back that's hurting.... it's both hips, both knees (right one more than left one) and ocassionally the groin area of my left leg..almost as if I've pulled that tendon/ligamnet there..which I haven't.
I had such an awful night last night..I got very little sleep..and had to be up early this morning to go have blood drawn (such fun! LOL) I wish I knew how to 'turn it off' so to speak..cause if I could, I surely would!!

AMEN SISTER! emoticon
I basically said the same damned thing to that Navy doc and I'm 15 years beyond when he said I'd be in one....I simply refuse to roll up into a ball and quit. Guess I'm to danged stubborn! emoticon

Right now....I HAVE to get things done for the parents when I'm here. AGAIN.....my mind set. I'll take a cocktail of drugs for the next 2 months, and I will get done what needs done.

After we leave. I'll lay on an ice pack if 24/7 if I have too. Then next Winter, I'll see what can be done. But I refuse to give in or give up. But that does not mean I'm not gonna piss and moan about it! emoticon

I do embrace my pain, Muladzh....if I did not, I would have put a bullet in my brain pan..."SQUISH!"

I'm right there with ya!! I do complain about it when it gets to this point, simply because it's beyond the point where I'm able to just embrace and/or absorb it. When I can't wash dishes, do a load of laundry, sweep just one room without tears rolling down my face from the sheer force of the pain, then it's pretty bad. Usually, I can ignore it, for the most part, and go on with my day. Not right now. emoticon

I hear ya.....for some reason, doing dishes is the worst, even when I'm not all that bad.
I don't know if it's the angle we are in when our hands are down in the water...it's barely a 35 to 45 degree angle....the absolute worst for my back. emoticon
But today I knew I had to do the kitchen.
Stick on one of those 8 hour heat wraps on my back....1 Valium, 1 Vicodin, 1 Cyclobenzaprine....breakfast and off I went.
When all done, lay down out here on the couch on an ice pack! emoticon
Now back in soon to start supper and visit..tis my day.....my way! emoticon

I wish I could use those heat wraps...but, not allowed because of my diabetes and the fentanyl patch.... One of these days..maybe!! I hope you don't end up overdoing too awfully much, Queeny!!
