I hated those 'plugs'....always just saved or bought those plastic containers that nursery's have (my local nursery let me have about a dozen of them)....where you can buy like petunias or small plants in....usually 6 or 12 attached to each other.
Then I'd fill them with Miracle grow potting mix and use those for my seed starting.

Queeny, that's kind of what I'm going to do with these trays, since we already have them. Same concept as what you're talking about, but I'm going to dump that...whatever you wanna call that dirt....out and put in the mix of Miracle Grow, perlite and composted cow manure, then retry some seeds and see if they do any better.
These trays have the clear plastic covers, to act as a greenhouse. Maybe we can get more, stronger and bigger seedlings that way.

I'll let y'all know how it goes, if/when I manage to get it done.

I pretty much do what you do, Queeny. My husband worked someplace that had a greenhouse attached, and he dumpster dived for me to get tons of those little cell pots for starting things. And bigger pots for transplanting. We fill them with miracle grow potting soil, and start our seeds in it. I recently attended a talk on starting herb seedlings, the presenter runs an herb nursery and does farmer's market all summer for herb plants. She said NOT to start them in anything with fertilizer, said it can stop them from starting! Well, mine have always come up anyway, but I guess it's something to think about.

Hmmmmm, I never added fertilizer to mine on purpose, but Miracle grow... it has nutrients in it....I suppose that is a fertilizer type..emoticon

I think tomorrow, if possible, I'm going to transplant the herb plants I bought, and get them into actual pots. They are all in those biodegradable pots that are almost like peat pots, but I may just take the plant out, altogether.

Night before last, I made spaghetti, using a jar of the homemade sauce we did last year, but it's really runny after sitting, so I usually add a small can of tomato paste to it, which means I have to add more spices. I added some store bought stuff, then pulled some of my fresh oregano and put in it...and OH MY GOSH! That was the best sauce I've ever eaten. The flavor just burst in your mouth. So, when I make my sauce this year, I will be adding fresh herbs.....all the way! DH was amazed at the difference adding the fresh stuff made. I put probably 10 small oregano leaves in the sauce, and let it simmer for a bit while the water for the noodles boiled then the noodles got cooked. YUM! I was rather proud of that LOL.

Oh, now I'm hungry for pasta! I love a good red sauce! What kind of oregano did you buy?

Another yummy fresh herb pasta dish is to just heat up some olive oil, add fresh minced garlic and snipped up fresh herbs, then dump the pasta on top without even cooking the herbs or garlic. The hot pasta cooks it just enough to warm it up. Soooo tasty with lots of basil, and parmesan cheese! We'll add a fresh chopped tomato sometimes if we have one, too. Cannot wait for summer cooking!

I counted today, and I have 40 tomato seedlings started! I get a bit carried away sometimes. I had six different varieties, seven if you count two different types of brandywine. Told DH that he's going to need to dig an extra bed for me. emoticon

The Oregano I got Greek. Very flavorful!

The sauce we made has home grown bell pepper, tomatoes and onions in it. We just pureed the tomatoes, chopped the peppers and onion together, then I added storebought garlic and spices to it, then canned it. After it sits, the natural water in the tomatoes tends to make it watery, so that's why I add some tomato paste (store bought) to it. just one of the small cans....and some more spices. It will be nice to add the fresh spices, instead of the store bought stuff to my sauce this year!

Finally....got the herbs transplanted today. All but one, and it's in a larger pot than the ones I bought when I thought I'd be transplanting my seedlings.

I mixed 10 pots of Miracle Grow potting soil, 4 pots of composted cow manure and about 1 pot of Perlite. Mixed it all up well (the pots were probably a gallon or so) and let it sit for a while.

The pots that most of the herbs were in were those Bonnie Bell biodegradable 'pots', but I took those off, completely, and tossed them into the hayfield. After getting them in the pots, I watered them real good, then put them on a small table on the back porch. They'll get plenty of morning sunshine, afternoon shade (when the sun is the hottest), and has some protection from the wind. Plus, it's just outside the kitchen/utility room door. Easy to get to if I need/want some fresh herbs for cooking and/or canning.

I have dill, basil, oregano, parsley, sage, thyme, tarragon and rosemary. I still need to get a couple of others, but those are the main ones I wanted anyway.
I have some Stevia waiting for me near Memphis. I'll get it on my way back home from Texas in June. I'll see the lady who has it on my way down, but I don't want to have to keep the plant in the truck for 2 weeks...so, she'll hang on to it for me till I head home.

We also got some things into the garden today, finally. Green and yellow bell peppers, hot and sweet banana peppers, 2 types of tomatoes and 9 cabbage plants. Our onions are coming up nicely, now, too.

Still have corn, okra, beans, cukes, squash (summer and zucchini) beets, we're gonna try sweet potatoes. That will probably be next weekend, or the one after. Depends on weather and time. Radishes and lettuce are coming up good, so, the garden is finally coming along.

Sounds like a great amount of progress! I love getting all new things in. At the farm, with year round gardening, there isn't the big flush at the beginning of spring. I kinda miss that. But we are getting that this year at our house since it's the first garden there in a awhile. It's fun to have all new baby plants out there!
